More conspiracy theories!
These wonderful Chicago "PUMAs" -- so totally devoted to Hillary Clinton (personally, I can't get past the two times I've heard Buzz Patterson speak on Hill and Bill) -- have generously shared some private thoughts (they are true patriots, btw, whom I have contributed to in the past due to their enormous personal efforts and sacrifices in the 2008 presidential election):
...to wit, a real business owner's ideas (and, trust me, a real business owner's opinions are worth more than any presidential candidate who's never owned one himself!)...

Swine Flu: Crisis, or Conspiracy?
Jeff Schreiber claims to be a "Legal writer by day, exhausted law student by night. Lucky husband and proud father throughout." And so he is...and mostly he posts very informative and down-to-earth posts--or one of his recent additions as co-bloggers do--so I was surprised to see a headline with the "c" word (conspiracy)!!!
This man's bio is pretty impressive: "Ian Thorpe is a British satirical writer. Before retiring at a rather tender age following a serious illness, he was a consultant specializing in integrated digital networks. His projects involved him in utilities, banking and finance, oil and chemicals and many branches of commerce and government. He had some writing success in the 1970s and 1980s but had to put that aside because consultancy paid better. He has been contributing at America's Right since March 2009."
So, I take it very seriously when he writes about how this "swine flu" fits into our current situation (I'd just like to clarify whether or not his "two horses" -- "Once you understand who may benefit, you are equipped to deal with Phobos and Diemos, the two horses that pull the chariot of ancient Greek war god Ares." -- have any relationship to the FOUR horses of the Apocalypse!)

Passengers Fought Pirates with Tables and Deck Chairs
When pirates attacked the cruise ship MSC Melody on Saturday, the captain was making small talk at the bar. Passengers have given a version of events that is more dramatic than the crew's accounts. They were the first to defend the ship and they are now criticizing the crew, who have been portrayed as heroes.Read more

Economy shrinks!
The Great One (Mark Levin) really emphasized the significance of this today on his radio show:
The economy shrank at a worse-than-expected 6.1 percent pace at the start of this year as sharp cutbacks by businesses and the biggest drop in U.S. exports in 40 years overwhelmed a rebound in consumer spending.

Obama's disdains Americans
Atlas Shrugs nails it:
He demands we respect Islam, demands we respect our enemies, demands we respect despots, dictators, annihilationists, and oppressors. But when reasoned, rational Americans display knowledge of our Constitution and peacefully protest against socialism, taxation without representation and the enslavement of our children and grandchildren, he condescends and ridicules them. Those tea parties are America.
This video is pathologically Obama. Watch his disdain when referring to the tea parties (listen to him say tea).
After 100 days, the new president has revealed himself as an effective salesman of exhausted ideas
So here we are, 100 days into the great eight-year triumph of Hope over Change, a new Era of Really Good Feelings in which only one thing has become increasingly, even irrefutably, clear: President Barack Obama is about as visionary as the guy who invented Dippin' Dots, Ice Cream of the Future. Far from sketching out a truly forward-looking set of policies for the 21st century, as his supporters had hoped, Obama is instead serving up cryogenically tasteless and headache-inducing morsels from years gone by.Obama's Vision Deficit
On issue after issue, Obama has made it clear that instead of blasting past "the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long," (as he promised in his inaugural address), he's moving full speed ahead toward policy prescriptions that already had less fizz than a case of Billy Beer back when Jimmy Carter was urging us all to wear sweaters and turn down our thermostats. Instead of thinking outside the box, Obama is nailing it shut from the inside.

The writing on the wall
Read it:
• You can’t borrow as much as he [Obama] will need to without raising interest rates that hurt the economy;Obama sows seeds of demise
• The massive amount of spending will trigger runaway inflation once the economy starts to recover;
• His overhaul of the tax code (still in the planning phases) and his intervention in corporate management will create such business uncertainty that nobody will invest in anything until they see the lay of the land;
• His bank program is designed to help banks, but not to catalyze consumer lending. And his proposal for securitization of consumer loans won’t work and is just what got us into this situation.
So Mr. Obama should enjoy his poll numbers while he may.
It IS Obama!
FACT CHECK: Obama disowns deficit he helped shapeRead more
WASHINGTON (AP) - "That wasn't me," President Barack Obama said on his 100th day in office, disclaiming responsibility for the huge budget deficit waiting for him on Day One.
It actually was him - and the other Democrats controlling Congress the previous two years - who shaped a budget so out of balance.

Barack Obama is the second most reviled newbie president of the last forty years
It's official: Barack Obama is the second most reviled newbie president of the last forty years. A gallup survey today published in the Washington Times shows Obama to have an approval rating of just 56 per cent. The only president to have performed worse than that at the end of his first 100 days in office was Bill Clinton - and only then because it happened to coincide with the spectacular mishandling of the Waco siege, which might reasonably be laid at the door of ATF and FBI incompetence rather than presidential negligence.Read more
Obama's low approval ratings, however, are all of his own making. He campaigned as a healing moderate who would take the US beyond partisan politics and restore the economy; instead he has terrified all those Americans who rightly abhor the idea of adopting European socialist, with the most sweeping advance of the progressive agenda and growth in the power of the state since the days of FDR's New Deal.

Obama's old friend and new regulatory czar Cass Sunstein sees Web as anti-democratic, proposed 24-hour delay on sending e-mail
WASHINGTON – Barack Obama's nominee for "regulatory czar" has advocated a "Fairness Doctrine" for the Internet that would require opposing opinions be linked and also has suggested angry e-mails should be prevented from being sent by technology that would require a 24-hour cooling off period.U.S. regulatory czar nominee wants Net 'Fairness Doctrine'
The revelations about Cass Sunstein, Obama's friend from the University of Chicago Law School and nominee to head the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, come in a new book by Brad O'Leary, "Shut Up, America! The End of Free Speech." OIRA will oversee regulation throughout the U.S. government.
The joke's on me
My husband's been on the warpath against all the crap that's built up in our house over the years. He's a collector (euphamism for hoarder) of compact discs (harking back to his days as a music reviewer for the now defunct Cash Box Magazine in Hollywood), books (justified by his two growing political websites) and studio equipment (due to our previous, and possibly future, lives as composers--him BMI--and software developers of The Music Masters Series).
As a "collector" of information (i.e. stacks of papers and magazines), I know all too well that he will turn on me when he is finished. So, today, I decided to be clever and grab some stuff from the BOTTOM of a huge stack on a hallway shelf that was supposed to just hold business and marketing books.
What did I find?
A Woman's Day (I hardly ever buy THAT magazine!) issue dated September 1, 2007 with the big headline story "Get Rid of Clutter For Good..."

The TARP Report: should be read by EVERY taxpayer and EVERY American
On April 21, the Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program Act of 2009--"SIGTARP"--submitted his quarterly report to Congress on his office's activities in relation to the TARP program. The report is a disquieting document that should be read by every American--certainly be every taxpayer.Read the whole thing!
The Inspector General's report documents the stunning and at least partly illegal expansion of TARP from the $700 billion originally allocated by Congress to what is now a $3 trillion complex of programs. This chart shows the various programs that are now included within SIGTARP's oversight, and how they have expanded from the initial $700 billion. Note that some of the programs are still incipient; $3 trillion is by no means a final number. Click to enlarge:

One of the biggest conspiracy theories I have heard in a long, long time!
Boy, this one's a real humdinger!!!
I have no idea, of course, whether it is true or not. You decide. Please comment if you have any information that either supports this or debunks it.
There is one thing that doesn't make sense about it though: Democrats never like to kill off their voter base (unless, somehow, those seven world-class microbiologists that mysteriously died last year created something that only kills off Republicans)! Then again, what about all those coffins and mass graves and...
Actually, I'm starting to get really nervous. Whoever did it, this just may be one of those "big ones" we all knew were coming one day.

FEMA ordered caskets over a year ago. DHS and FEMA began telling counties to plan for mass graves months ago. Panasonic knew that new strains of flu would strike and ordered their top people home. The military has been buying up all the ammunition. The bankers and stock guys have brazenly robbed as much as they can as fast as they can. The government admits flu virus was "lost" from its bio-weapons lab and the world is suddenly seeing an outbreak of a new, highly contagious and very deadly flu. Johns-Hopkins Docs say a 4 part flu is very unusual and may be man made.Prepare to die; it's been planned and has begun

Obama: So Far, So Good?
Strong job approval, higher personal ratings"--that's pollster Andrew Kohut's assessment of President Obama at roughly the 100-day point. "A bravura performance," wrote David Broder of the Washingon Post. The president's flacks take the Muhammad Ali approach: Obama is The Greatest. What comes to my mind, however, is the guy who falls off a skyscraper and halfway down declares, "So far, so good."Read more
Maybe there's a soft landing ahead for Obama or even a takeoff as his policies succeed. But my expectations are low. One reason is the Obama contradiction. Two of his stated goals (economic recovery, energy independence) are undermined by his actual policies. Another reason is history. There's no evidence to suggest Obama's policies of courting enemies and airing the country's supposed misdeeds will lessen threats to national security or strengthen America's role in the world.
Obama, for the moment, is riding a wave of announcements, claims, hopes, and possibilities. This is what new presidents thrive on. It's what makes them popular, especially because there's no accountability. But a year from now, perhaps sooner, the joy ride will be over. Results will matter. Obama's policies will either be working or not. And if not, even a friendly media won't be able to sugarcoat the bad news or alleviate the political consequences.
The economy is Obama's biggest problem.

British author wonders: Why does president pantywaist (Obama) hate America so badly?
If al-Qaeda, the Taliban and the rest of the Looney Tunes brigade want to kick America to death, they had better move in quickly and grab a piece of the action before Barack Obama finishes the job himself. Never in the history of the United States has a president worked so actively against the interests of his own people - not even Jimmy Carter.Read more

Obama's order not to rescue hostage confirmed by National Security Advisor and Pentagon
Stung by the widely circulated “SEAL pals” account of what really happened in Somalia (discussed here last Friday), the Obama administration had National Security Advisor James L. Jones and a number of anonymous Pentagon sources give their side two days ago in a Washington Times exclusive. Their mission, according to reporter Bill Gertz, was:Read more
"... to dispel Internet reports that the military was delayed from taking action by indecision inside the White House."
Clintonesque parsing of words is evident throughout the Jones-Pentagon account, amounting on more than one occasion to outright dishonesty. Yet the actual information they provide (as opposed to the lawyerly spin they try to put on it) actually confirms the most damning details in BooBooFan’s purported SEAL report.

Our Crazy Language
By Richard Lederer
English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven can speak it. More than half the world’s books and three-quarters of international mail are written in English. Of all the languages, English has the largest vocabulary---perhaps as many as two million words---and indeed, it is the repository of one of the noblest bodies of literature. Nonetheless let’s face it, English is a crazy language. There are no eggs in eggplant, pines in pineapple or hams in hamburger. Sweetmeats are candy while sweetbreads (which aren’t sweet) are meat.
We take English for granted but when we explore its paradoxes, we find that ‘quicksand’ works slowly, ‘boxing rings’ are square, ‘public bathrooms’ have no baths in them and ‘guinea pigs’ are neither pigs nor are they from Guinea.
And why is it that a writer writes but a finger doesn’t fing, a grocer doesn’t groce, a humdinger doesn’t hum-ding nor a hammer ham? And if the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth? We have one goose and two geese so shouldn’t the plural of moose should be meese! One index, two indices so if you have more than one Kleenex, shouldn’t they be two Kleenices?
Doesn’t it seem loopy that you can make amends but you can’t just make one amend and you can comb through the annals of history but not just one annal? If you have ‘a bunch of odds and ends’ and you get rid of all but one, which one do you have? And what would you call it?
If a teacher taught- why isn’t it true that a preacher proght? If a horsehair mat is made from the hair of horses and a camel’s-hair coat is made from the hair of camels, from what is a mohair coat made from?
If a vegetarian eats vegetables then what does a humanitarian eat? In the past- tense of words, if you wrote a letter, perhaps you had also bote your tongue…
Sometimes I wonder if the people that speak English should be committed to ‘the asylum for the verbally insane’. In what other language do people drive on parkways and park on driveways, recite at plays and play at recitals, ship by truck, send cargo (car-go) by ship and have noses that run and feet that smell?
How can ‘a slim chance’ and ‘a fat chance’, ‘overlook’ and ‘oversee’, ‘quite a lot’ and ‘quite a few’ be synonyms but yet, ‘a wise man’ and ‘a wise guy be antonyms (opposites)? Did you ever notice that we talk about certain things only when they’re absent?
We refer to cars as horse-less carriages but have you ever seen a horse-ful carriage? And unplanned events are referred to as hapless so planned ones must be hapful… Have you ever seen a strapful gown, met a ‘sung hero’, experienced quited love, met someone who was combobulated, gruntled, ruly or peccable?
And where are the people that really are ‘spring chickens’ or would actually ‘hurt a fly’? I meet people everyday who can ‘cut the mustard’ and I can touch with a ten foot pole---but I can’t refer to them in English.
You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language that refers to a house burning up as it ‘burning down’, we fill out forms by filling them ‘in’ and when alarm clocks ‘go off’, they go on…
English was invented by people and it reflects the creativity of the human race (which of course doesn’t ‘race’ at all). And that is why, when the stars come ‘out’ at night they become visible, when I wind-up my watch it keeps ‘running’ but when I wind-up this talk, it ends!
PS: Why doesn't "buick" rhyme with "quick"?

Real story of Obama and the Pirates from someone on board the USS Bainbridge
Here's what I found out from my contacts at NSWC Norfolk and at SOCOM Tampa. First though, let me orient you to familiarize you with the "terrain."
In Africa from Djibouti at the southern end of the Red Sea eastward through the Gulf of Aden to round Cape Guardafui at the easternmost tip of Africa (also known as "The Horn of Africa") is about a 600 nm transit before you stand out into the Indian Ocean. That transit is comparable in distance to that from the mouth of the Mississippi at New Orleans to the tip of Florida at Key West--except that 600 nm over there is infested with Somalia pirates.
Ships turning southward at the Horn of Africa transit the SLOC (Sea Lane of Commerce) along the east coast of Somalia because of the prevailing southerly currents there. It's about 1,500 nm on to Mombassa, which is just south of the equator in Kenya. Comparably, that's about the transit distance from Portland Maine down the east coast of the US to Miami Florida. In other words, the ocean area being patrolled by our naval forces off the coast of Somalia is comparable to that in the Gulf of Mexico from the Mississippi River east to Miami then up the eastern seaboard to Maine.
Second, let me globally orient you from our Naval Operating Base in Norfolk, VA, east across the Atlantic to North Africa, thence across the Med to Suez in Egypt, thence southward down the Red Sea to Djibouti at the Gulf of Aden, thence eastward to round Cape Guardafui at the easternmost tip of Africa, and thence southerly some 300 miles down the east cost of Somali out into the high seas of the Indian Ocean to the position of MV ALABAMA is a little more than 7,000 nm, and plus-nine time-zones ahead of EST.
Hold that thought, in that, a C-17 transport averaging a little better than 400 kts (SOG) takes the best part of 18 hours to make that trip. In the evening darkness late Thursday night, a team of Navy SEALs from NSWC (Naval Surface Warfare Center) Norfolk parachuted from such a C-17 into the black waters (no refraction of light) of the Indian Ocean--close-aboard to our 40,000 ton amphibious assault ship, USS BOXER (LHD 4), the flagship of our ESG (Expeditionary Strike Group) in the AOR (Area Of Responsibility, the Gulf of Aden). They not only parachuted in with all of their "equipment," they had their own inflatable boats, RHIB's (Rigid Hull, Inflatable Boats) with them for over-water transport. They went into BOXER's landing dock, debarked, and staged for the rescue--Thursday night.
And, let me comment on time-late: In that the SEAL's quick response--departing ready-alert in less than 4 hours from Norfolk--supposedly surprised POTUS's staff, whereas President Obama was miffed not to get his "cops" there before the Navy. He reportedly questioned his staff, "Will 'my' FBI people get there before the Navy does?" It took the FBI almost 12 hours to put together a team and get them packed-up-- for an "at sea" rescue. The FBI was trying to tell him that they are not practiced to do this--Navy SEALs are. But, BHO wanted the FBI there "to help," that is, carry out the Attorney General's (his) orders to negotiate the release of Captain Phillips peacefully--because apparently he doesn't trust GW's military to carry out his "political guidance"
The flight of the FBI's passenger jet took a little less than 14 hours at 500-some knots to get to Djibouti. BOXER'S helos picked them up and transported them out to the ship. The Navy SEALs were already there, staged, and ready to act by the time POTUS's FBI arrived on board latter that evening. Notably, the first request by the OSC (On Scene Commander) that early Friday morning to take them out and save Captain Phillips was denied, to wit: "No, wait until 'my' FBI people get there."
Third, please consider a candid assessment of ability that finds that the FBI snipers had never practiced shooting from a rolling, pitching, yawing, surging, swaying, heaving platform--and, target--such as a ship and a lifeboat on the high seas. Navies have been doing since Admiral Nelson who had trained "Marines" to shoot muskets from the ship's rigging--ironically, he was killed at sea in HMS VICTORY at the Battle of Trafalgar by a French Marine rifleman that shot him from the rigging of the French ship that they were grappling alongside.
Notably, when I was first training at USNA in 1955, the Navy was doing it with a SATU, Small Arms Training Unit, based at our Little Creek amphib base. Now, Navy SEAL's, in particular SEAL Team SIX (The "DevGru") based at NSWC (Naval Surface Warfare Center) at Little Creek do that training now, and hone their skills professionally--daily. Shooting small arms from a ship is more of an accomplished "Art Form" than it is a practiced skill. When you are "in the bubble" and "in tune" with the harmonic motion you find, through practice, that you are "able to put three .308 slugs inside the head of a quarter at 100 meters, in day or night--or, behind a camouflaged net or a thin enclosure, such as a superstructure bulkhead. Yes, we have the monocular scopes that can "see" heat--and, draw a bead on it. SEALs are absolutely expert at it--with the movie clips to prove it.
Okay, now try to imagine patrolling among the boats fishing everyday out on the Grand Banks off our New England coast, and then responding to a distress call from down around the waters between Florida and the Bahamas. Three points for you to consider here: (1) Time-Distance-Speed relationships for ships on the high seas, for instance, at a 25-knot SOA (Speed Of Advance) it takes 24 hours to make good 600 nm-- BAINBRIDGE did. (2) Fishermen work on the high seas, and (3) The best place to hide as a "fisherman" pirate is among other fishermen
Early Wednesday morning, 4/8/2009, MV ALABAMA is at sea in the IO about 300 miles off the (east) coast of Somalia en route to Mombassa Kenya. Pirates in small boat start harassing her, and threatening her with weapons. MV ALABAMA's captain sent out the distress call by radio, and ordered his Engineer to shut down the engines as well as the ship-service electrical generators--in our lingo, "Go dark and cold." He informed his crew by radio what was happening, and ordered them to go to an out-of-the-way compartment and lock themselves in it--from the inside. He would stay in the pilot house to "negotiate" with the pirates.
The pirates boarded, captured the Captain, and ordered him to start the engines. He said he would order his Engineer to do so, and he called down to Engine Control on the internal communication system, but got no answer. The lead pirate ordered two of his four men to go down and find him and get the engines started.
Inside a ship without any lights is like the definition of dark. The advantage goes to the people who work and live there. They jumped the two pirates in a dark passageway. Both pirates lost their weapons, but one managed to scramble and get away. The other they tied up, put tape over his mouth and a knife at his throat.
Other members of the crew opened the drain cocks on the pirates boat and cast it adrift. It foundered and sunk. The scrambling pirate made it back to the pilot house and told of his demise. The pirates took the Captain at gun point, and told him to launch one of his rescue boats (not a life boat, per se). As he was lowering the boat for them, the crew appeared with the other pirate to negotiate a trade. The crew let their hostage go to soon, and the pirates kept the captain. But, he purposefully had lowered the boat so it would jam.
With the rescue boat jammed, the pirates jumped over to a lifeboat and released it as the captain jumped in the water. They fired at him, made him stop, and grabbed him out of the water. Now, as night falls in the vastness of the Indian Ocean, we have the classic "Mexican" standoff, to wit: A life-boat that is just that, a life-boat adrift without any means of propulsion except oars and paddles; and, a huge (by comparison) Motor Vessel Container Ship adrift with a crew that is not going to leave their captain behind. The pirates are enclosed under its shelter-covering, holding the captain as their hostage. The crew is hunkered down in their ship waiting for the "posse" to arrive.
After receiving MV ALABAMA'S distress call, USS BAINBRIDGE (DDG 96) was dispatched by the ESG commander to respond to ALABAMA's distress call. At best sustainable speed, she arrived on scene the day after--that is, in the dark of that early Thursday morning. As BAINBRIDGE quietly and slowly, at darkened-ship without any lights to give her away, arrived on scene, please consider a recorded interview with the Chief Engineer of MV ALABAMA describing BAINBRIDGE's arrival. He said it was something else "...to see the Navy slide in there like a greyhound!" He then said as she slipped in closer he could see the "Stars and Stripes" flying from her masthead. He got choked up saying it was the "...proudest moment of my life."
Phew! Let that sink in.
Earlier in the day, one of the U.S. Navy's Maritime Patrol Aircraft, a fixed wing P3C, flew over to recon the scene. They dropped a buoy with a radio to the pirates so that the Navy's interpreter could talk with the pirates. When BAINBRIDGE arrived, the pirates thought the radio to be a beaconing device, and threw it overboard. They wanted a satellite telephone so that they could call home for help. Remember now, they are fishermen, not "Rocket Scientists," in that, they don't know that we can intercept the phone transmission also.
MV ALABAMA provided them with a satellite phone. They called home back to "somebody" in Eyl Somalia (so that we now know where you live) to come out and get them. The "somebody" in Eyl said they would be out right away with other hostages, like 54 of them from other countries, and that they would be coming out in two of their pirated ships. Right--and, the tooth fairy will let you have sex with her. Yea, in paradise. The "somebody" in Eyl just chalked up four more expendables as overhead for "the cost of operation." Next page.
Anyway, ESG will continue to "watch" Eyl for any ships standing out.
The Navy SEAL team, SEAL TEAM SIX, from NSWC briefed the OSC (Commander Castellano, CO BAINBRIDGE) on how they could rescue the captain from the life boat with swimmers--"Combat Swimmers," per se. That plan was denied by POTUS because it put the captain in danger--and, involved killing the pirates.
The FBI negotiators arrived on scene, and talked the pirates into sending their wounded man over for treatment Saturday morning. Later that afternoon, the SEAL's sent over their RHIB with food and water to recon the life boat but the pirates shot at it. They could have taken them out then (from being fired upon) but were denied again being told that the captain was not in "imminent danger." The FBI negotiators calmed the situation by informing the pirates of threatening weather as they could see storm clouds closing from the horizon, and offered to tow the life boat. The pirates agreed, and BAINBRIDGE took them under tow in their wake at 30 meters-- exactly 30 meters, which is exactly the distance the SEALs practice their shooting skills.
With the lifeboat under tow, riding comfortably bow-down on BAINBRIDGE's wake-wave ("rooster tail"), had a 17-second period of harmonic motion, and at the end of every half-period (8.5 seconds) was steady on. The light-enhanced (infra-red heat) monocular scopes on the SEAL's .308 caliber Mark 11 Mod 0 H&K suppressor-fitted sniper rifles easily imaged their target very clearly. Pirates in a life boat at 30-meters could be compared to fish in a barrel. All that was necessary was to take out the plexiglass window so that it would not deflect the trajectory of the high velocity .308 round. So, a sniper (one of four) with a wad-cutter round (a flaxen sabot) would take out the window a split second before the kill-shot--no change in sight-picture, just the window blowing out, clean.
Now, here's the part BHO's "whiz kids" knew as well as the Navy hierarchy, including CO BAINBRIDGE and CO SEAL TEAM SIX. It's the law in Article 19 of Appendix L in the "Convention of the High Seas" that the Commanding Officer of a US Ship on the high seas is obligated to respond to distress signals from any flagged ship (US or otherwise), and protect the life and property thereof when deemed to be in IMMINENT DANGER. So, in the final analysis, it would be Captain Castellano call as to "Imminent Danger," and that he alone was obligated (duty bound) to act accordingly.
Got the picture?
After medically attending to the wounded pirated, and feeding him, come first light (from the east) on Easter Sunday morning and the pirates saw they were being towed further out to sea (instead of westward toward land), the wounded pirate demanded to be returned to the lifeboat. There would BE NO more negotiations--and, the four Navy SEAL snipers "in the bubble" went "Unlock." The pirate holding Captain Philips raised the gun to his head, and IMMINENT DANGER was so observed and noted in the Log as CO BAINBRIDGE gave the classic order: WEAPONS RELEASED! I can hear the echo in my earpiece now, "On my count (from 8.5 seconds), 3, 2, 1, !" POP, BANG! Out went the window, followed by three simultaneous shots. The scoreboard flashed: "GAME OVER, GAME OVER-- NAVY 3, PIRATES 0!"
I hope you found the above informative as best I know it-- and, please excuse me in that after more than 50 years the Navy is still in me. I submit that AMERICA is going to make a comeback, and more than likely it'll be on the back of our cherished youth serving with honor in Our military. So, let's Look Up, Get Up--and, Never Give Up!
God Bless Our Troops, and GOD SAVE AMERICA!

UPDATE: I got this from an email, but here's another source for this story

Obama undermines the CIA...and our security
Calling the ACLU push to release the photographs "prurient" and "reprehensible," Dr. Mark M. Lowenthal, former Assistant Director of Central Intelligence for Analysis and Production, tells ABC News that the Obama administration should have taken the case all the way to the Supreme Court.Read the whole thing!
"They should have fought it all the way; if they lost, they lost," Lowenthal said. "There's nothing to be gained from it. There's no substantive reason why those photos have to be released."
Lowenthal said the president's moves in the last week have left many in the CIA dispirited, based on "the undercurrent I've been getting from colleagues still in the building, or colleagues who have left not that long ago."
"We ask these people to do extremely dangerous things, things they've been ordered to do by legal authorities, with the understanding that they will get top cover if something goes wrong," Lowenthal says. "They don't believe they have that cover anymore." Releasing the photographs "will make it much worse," he said.

Obama's Killing Field
by Dick McDonald
I have developed a marvelous plan to increase Social Security and Medicare benefits while at the same time substantially reducing the overall tax load all Americans bear - www.riseupamerica.us
The major resistance to my plan has been older people worried about losing their monthly Social Security check. If what Charles Krauthammer suggests in Obama: The Grand Strategy - that Obama’s plan is to pay for the trillions his socialist agenda will cost by a clever withholding of medical treatment to people in the last six months of their lives - then older people have something more serious than losing their Social Security check to worry about - like losing their life - in Obama’s modern version of the killing fields of Cambodia.
Death-by-delay has already been adopted by other state-run medical plans like those in England and Canada. Genocide by bureaucratic fiat is the norm. As fully a third to one-half of medical costs occur in the last six months of life withholding life-saving or life-extending procedures during that most painful period in one’s life appears to be the social justice Obama has in mind. The costs saved by withholding approval of treatment will run into the trillions. And Obama has to have trillions to pay for his socialist scheme of redistribution presently being legislated by a Congress either completely blind to Obama’s treacherous plan or complicit in implementing it.
President Obama and even Charles Krauthammer fail to realize that there is a more elegant solution to the Social Security and Medicare dilemma than raising taxes, reducing benefits and/or withholding treatment. That is to continue current programs as the floor under which no benefits can fall but change the funding to one in which the $1.5 trillion presently being withheld from citizens is placed in Personal Pension Accounts (PPA) owned by each taxpayer and involuntary invested by them in indexed-stock investments for their working life to compound into millions to allow them to self-finance the last months of their lives as well as enjoy an affluent and healthy retirement. See the above link. The fact that such a plan would solve our current economic crisis is just an added bonus.
Those of us complaining about the enormity of the debt Obama is incurring with our tax dollars and those of our children might start worrying about the genocide of our older folks. And if you are one of those older folks you might want to start worrying about Obama’s plan to withhold that heart bypass, hip replacement or kidney transplant you may need. That is the price one pays for installing a universal health plan run by heartless bureaucrats that kill by withholding treatment because a guy like Obama has decided you are not worth the cost.

Dear President Obama: You scare me
AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT OBAMA (from a retired Marine's network):
Dear President Obama, You are the thirteenth President under whom I have lived and unlike any of the others, you truly scare me.
You scare me because after months of exposure, I know nothing about you.
You scare me because I do not know how you paid for your expensive Ivy League education and your upscale lifestyle and housing with no visible signs of support.
You scare me because you did not spend the formative years of youth growing up in America and culturally you are not an American.
You scare me because you have never run a company or met a payroll.
You scare me because you have never had military experience, thus don't understand it at its core.
You scare me because you lack humility and 'class', always blaming others.
You scare me because for over half your life you have aligned yourself with radical extremists who hate America and you refuse to publicly denounce these radicals who wish to see America fail.
You scare me because you are a cheerleader for the 'blame America' crowd and deliver this message abroad.
You scare me because you want to change America to a European style country where the government sector dominates instead of the private sector.
You scare me because you want to replace our health care system with a government controlled one.
You scare me because you prefer 'wind mills' to responsibly capitalizing on our own vast oil, coal and shale reserves.
You scare me because you want to kill the American capitalist goose that lays the golden egg which provides the highest standard of living in the world.
You scare me because you have begun to use 'extortion' tactics against certain banks and corporations.
You scare me because your own political party shrinks from challenging you on your wild and irresponsible spending proposals.
You scare me because you will not openly listen to or even consider opposing points of view from intelligent people.
You scare me because you falsely believe that you are both omnipotent and omniscient.
You scare me because the media gives you a free pass on everything you do.
You scare me because you demonize and want to silence the Limbaughs, Hannitys, O'Reillys and Becks who offer opposing, conservative points of view.
You scare me because you prefer controlling over governing.
Finally, you scare me because if you serve a second term I will probably not feel safe in writing a similar letter.

According to a blogger who follows the issue, the treaty was adopted by President Clinton years ago but never ratified by the U.S. Senate, a goal Obama now has adopted.
The writer, B.A. Lawson, says, "If you reload your own ammo you may find yourself engaged in 'Illicit Manufacturing' of ammunition under an arms control treaty that President Obama started pushing last week in Mexico."

Susan Rice is confused about international law and North Korea!
It's strange enough that the Obama Administration is hyping last week's toothless statement by the United Nations Security Council condemning North Korea's recent rocket launch. Even more amazing, it says the U.N. move is "legally binding" on member states.Read more
Those were the words used by Susan Rice, U.S. ambassador to the U.N., and repeated by a State Department spokesman. Ms. Rice is badly misinformed. As she ought to know, a "presidential statement" issued by the Security Council is legally binding on no one.

Press Release from the Latin American Republicans of South Florida
The Latin American Republicans Of South Florida Express Concern And Regret Regarding President Obama's Recent OAS Summit Appearances With Regional Despots
Boca Raton, FL, April 21, 2009 - The Latin American Republicans of South Florida wish to express their disappointment and disapproval regarding certain regrettable public episodes that occurred during President Barack Obama's recent overseas diplomatic visit to the OAS Summit in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The Latin American Republicans of South Florida believe that President Obama's lack of diplomatic savviness and attention to Presidential protocol inadvertently gave public relations victories to several Latin American despots who have an established track record of oppression and tyranny.
When an American President offers to meet with certain world leaders who are the purveyors of anti-American rhetoric and engaged in the oppression of their nation's citizens - and does so without preconditions - he lends the prominence and stature of the Office of the President to those despots which can ultimately be misused in a manner that gives legitimacy to those same oppressive actions, whether our President intends this or not. The Latin American Republicans of South Florida clearly understand that the President oftentimes has to deal with despots and other unsavory elements when they are presented with no other choice. However, we also understand that public appearances with despots such as Hugo Chavez, Daniel Ortega, and Evo Morales can and will be manipulated by those leaders in a way which heightens their standing at home and lends legitimacy to their domestic oppression.
Therefore, we would like to respectfully remind President Obama that American foreign policy, as well as the diplomatic appearances and overtures that he makes as President of the United States not only affect the strategic interests of the United States, they also have a moral aspect to them; and if those overtures and appearances are not carefully considered, they can be used as a tool to continue to justify the continued repression of millions of people throughout Latin America.

Service
I was confused when I heard the word 'service' used with these agencies:
Internal Revenue 'Service '
U.S. Postal 'Service '
Telephone 'Service '
Cable TV 'Service '
Civil 'Service '
State, City, County & Public 'Service '
Customer 'Service '
This is not what I thought 'service' meant.
But today, I overheard two farmers talking, and one of them said he had hired a bull to 'service' a few cows...
BAM!!! It all came into focus.
Now I understand what all those agencies are doing!

This bill is in the first step in the legislative process to give African-Americans REPARATIONS for slavery in the United States.

FBI spied on TEA Party Americans
If you one of the estimated 750,000 Americans who attended one of about 600 TEA parties last week, you might have seen media cameras covering the event. Media cameras, however, were not the only cameras taking video at these events, something that has at least one current FBI agent concerned over the future of America. According to this agent - the same agent who provided the Northeast Intelligence Network (NEIN) exclusively the unreleased photographs of the 11 missing Egyptian students who were the subject of a FBI BOLO in August 2006–placed his concerns for true patriots of the U.S. over his own career when he confided that covert surveillance was “planned and performed” at each of the TEA parties that took place last Tuesday.Read the whole thing!
“Listen to what I am saying,” stated the source during an interview with Doug Hagmann, founder (NEIN). “The Department of Homeland Security Intelligence Assessment that is receiving so much attention is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg, and the true patriotic citizens of this country are on the Titanic. This is what bothers me. But is goes far beyond that assessment. There have been very significant changes made over the last few years that redirect the focus and assets of the intelligence community internally. These changes have greatly accelerated under this administration, and the threats have been redefined to include those who used to be patriots. It’s not only chilling but absolutely insulting to God-fearing Americans.”

Bank bailout may hurt taxpayers, be open to fraud
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Taxpayers are increasingly exposed to losses and the government is more vulnerable to fraud under Obama administration initiatives that have created a federal bank bailout program of "unprecedented scope," a government report finds.Read more
In a 250-page quarterly report to Congress, the rescue program's special inspector general concludes that a private-public partnership designed to rid financial institutions of their "toxic assets" is tilted in favor of private investors and creates "potential unfairness to the taxpayer."

49% of survey respondents believe Saudi Arabia exports the most oil to the U.S., while just 13% correctly identify Canada as our top foreign supplier!
Our nation is on the precipice of a dramatic change in policy. Given the sweeping nature of the White House's proposals, it is worrisome that much of the Obama administration's agenda is based more on myth than in fact, more on hope than in reality.Enabling Unrealistic Energy Plans Is A Woefully Ill-Informed Public
The danger of such misguided plans is that, because they will increase the cost of energy, we'll be left with less of it.
American businesses and consumers can ill afford such a path. Rooting public policy in facts and reality is a must if we want reliable, affordable energy.
And given the state of our rising population and increased competition for scarce energy resources, a reliable, affordable energy supply is crucial to economic prosperity.
How much of the American public's energy and environmental knowledge is based on fact? Evidence from a new survey conducted by the Manhattan Institute, with Zogby Associates, indicates that many Americans misunderstand a wide range of energy issues.

Here's the problem
In the New Foundation speech, Obama correctly (again) identifies the skyrocketing cost of Medicare and Medicaid as the key fiscal problem. But then he claims that Medicaid and Medicare reform is the same as his health-care reform, fatuously citing as his authority a one-day meeting of handpicked interested parties at his "Fiscal Responsibility Summit."The Sting, In Four Parts
Here's the problem. The heart of Obama's health-care reform is universality. Covering more people costs more money. That is why Obama's budget sets aside an extra $634 billion in health-care spending, a down payment on an estimated additional spending of $1 trillion. How does the administration curtail the Medicare and Medicaid entitlement by adding yet another (now universal) health-care entitlement that its own estimate acknowledges increases costs by about $1 trillion?
Which is why in his March 24 news conference, Obama could not explain how -- when the near-term stimulative spending is over and his ambitious domestic priorities kick in, promising sustained prosperity and deficit reduction -- the deficits at the end of the coming decade are rising, not falling. The Congressional Budget Office has deficits increasing in the last seven years of the decade from an already unsustainable $672 billion annually to $1.2 trillion by 2019.
This is the sand on which the new foundation is constructed. Obama has the magic to make words mean almost anything. Numbers are more resistant to his charms.

Now do you feel safer?
White House lawyers are refusing to accept the findings of an inter-agency committee that the Uighur Chinese Muslims held at Guantanamo Bay are too dangerous to release inside the U.S., according to Pentagon sources familiar with the action.[Obama thought other countries would take in these poor innocent men and so he closed Gitmo--but they won't! A recent insight at G-20: As Austrian Interior Minister Maria Fekter explained with impeccable Germanic logic, "if they're not dangerous, why not just keep them in America?"]
This action -- coupled with the release of previously top secret legal opinions on harsh interrogation methods -- demonstrates the Obama administration’s willingness to ignore reality.
Reviewing the Uighurs detention, the inter-agency panel found that they weren’t the ignorant, innocent goatherds the White House believed them to be. The committee determined they were too dangerous to release because they were members of the ETIM terrorist group, the “East Turkistan Islamic Movement,” and because their presence at the al-Queda training camp was no accident. There is now no ETIM terrorist cell in the United States: there will be one if these Uighurs are released into the United States. The Uighurs and the 'Torture' Memos
According to Defense Department sources, the White House legal office has told the inter-agency review group to re-do their findings to come up with the opposite answer.

US Weighing Punishing Israel if it Attacks Iran
Having taken military action against Iran off the table, the Obama administration is considering ways of punishing Israel if it attacks Iran to end its nuclear arms program (and prevent a second Holocaust).Read the whole thing!
In other words, having failed to contain Iran, the United States is concentrating on restraining Israel.
EDITOR'S NOTE: About Obama's apologizing to the world and bowing to the Saudi King--the left loves it. The more the President apologizes for alleged American arrogance and other supposed sins, the more popular he is with the Democratic Party's left wing. The deeper he bows, the more they appreciate him. The left believes it is high time that America was brought to its knees, forced to submit to the Third World. Like the radical right, the left makes common cause with Islamism in order to cut America down to size and set Israel up for a final solution. Israel is especially despised for its success and power; its defeat is seen as paving the way for the disappearance of the Jews as a people. Like the failed Russian revolutionaries of the late 1800s, the pro-pogrom Norodniki, who sought to ally with Russia's notoriously anti-Semitic peasants, today's left believes that "Jewish blood will oil the wheels of revolution."
Most Jewish Norodniki left the movement because of its anti-Semitism. Will American Jews leave the Democratic Party when the Obama administration's betrayal of Israel becomes too obvious to ignore?

Obama specifically denied two rescue plans developed by the Bainbridge CPN and SEAL teams...
Having spoken to some SEAL pals here in Virginia Beach yesterday and asking why this thing dragged out for 4 days, I got the following:Read their account
1. BHO wouldn't authorize the DEVGRU/NSWC SEAL teams to the scene for 36 hours going against OSC (on scene commander) recommendation.
2. Once they arrived, BHO imposed restrictions on their ROE that they couldn't do anything unless the hostage's life was in "imminent" danger
3. The first time the hostage jumped, the SEALS had the raggies all sighted in, but could not fire due to ROE restriction
4. When the navy RIB came under fire as it approached with supplies, no fire was returned due to ROE restrictions. As the raggies were shooting at the RIB, they were exposed and the SEALS had them all dialed in.
5. BHO specifically denied two rescue plans developed by the Bainbridge CPN and SEAL teams
6. Bainbridge CPN and SEAL team CDR finally decide they have the OpArea and OSC authority to solely determine risk to hostage. 4 hours later, 3 dead raggies
7. BHO immediately claims credit for his "daring and decisive" behaviour. As usual with him, it's BS.

Iran's Latest U.S. Hostage

Iran's Latest U.S. Hostage
Goodwill begets an espionage trial.
In 2003, an Iranian-born Canadian photojournalist named Zahra Kazemi was arrested in Tehran, jailed in its notorious Evin prison and charged with espionage. Less than three weeks later, Kazemi was dead. An Iranian doctor who examined her before her death later reported that she had been raped, sustained a skull fracture and had her fingernails ripped out.If you read this whole article, you will understand that the American people were duped into believing that Obama would change the way that Iran relates to the United States. This, and other information coming out daily in the news proves they were all just "useful idiots."
Now another foreign journalist is imprisoned at Evin and also charged with espionage. In late January, Roxana Saberi, a U.S.-born reporter of Iranian descent who had been living in Iran for several years, was arrested for buying a bottle of wine. In early March, she was accused of "illegal activities," including working without press credentials. She was later indicted for espionage and on Monday her case went to trial, which lasted a day; a verdict is expected within weeks.
Advocates of engagement often make the case that talks are the best way to foster better relations with Iran, and a better Iran altogether. Ms. Saberi's prosecution is as good an indication as any of the real nature of the regime, and of how the mullahs intend to reciprocate Mr. Obama's open handshake.Read the whole thing!

I listened to the Mark Levin show today (which I do everyday) and, believe me, this is NOT a joke.
The government is starting to clamp down under the guise of "protecting" us:
The Report was issued a week before the scheduled Tea Parties across the country, and is all over the news today. Reading the report is depressing, not because it reveals any current threat, but because of the shoddy definitions and analysis.Read the whole thing here: THE CONSTITUTION IS A SUBERSIVE MANIFESTO PER DHS
One thing that is not clear from the news reports, to begin with, is that the Report specifically states that there is no current real threat, even from the most extreme White Supremacist groups: "Threats from white supremacist and violent anti-government groups during 2009 have been mostly rhetorical and have not indicated plans to carry out violent acts." From the news accounts, you would think there was an actual threat, but that is not so.
But the even bigger vice is how a "rightwing extremist" is defined. I don't disagree that the few remaining White Supremacist groups should be in any definition, but DHS puts a distinctly political spin on the definition (emphasis mine):

When Benjamin Franklin was asked at the close of the 1787 Constitutional Convention, "What have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?”, the learned gentleman answered both wisely and cynically, “A Republic, if you can keep it.”THE SITUATION:
Can we keep it? That's the question at the heart of the great struggle for America's soul. Are we a nation of laws or a people of pop culture?
America, the original Ownership Society, is swiftly becoming the Owned Society. The Ownership Society meant that Americans were one of the few citizenries that actually government themselves, because they owned their country. The Owned Society by contrast rolls everything together into one massive bureaucratic pyramid that owns everything and controls everyone, from cradle to grave.Read the following article to understand that we, as a nation, are now facing the determing question of our future...slavery or freedom?
The way to turn one into the other is through disempowerment and devaluation. And by causing people to forget that they are owners, by promising them that life as slaves will be so much easier for them. Why bother working hard when your new bureaucratic masters promise to take care of you instead? Universal health care, unlimited immigration, universal laws, universal everything. Come for the free chains, stay for the 16 hour ditch digging in the volunteer community corps.

Obama dithered for nearly three days on pirates
Politicalwarfare.org | Apr 13, 2009

Piracy on the high seas has been a military issue for the United States since the founding of the Republic. President Thomas Jefferson waged our first foreign war to fight Islamic pirates in the Mediterranean.
So why did President Barack Obama dither full-speed ahead, with the FBI impounding the pirated Maersk Alabama as a "crime scene"?
White House spin, being headlined in the press, is that President Barack Obama "twice approved force" to rescue Maersk Alabama Captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates.
What isn't making the headlines is that Obama flailed and dithered for nearly three days before first approving force.
The British Guardian newspaper reports that the pirates had taken the Maersk Alabama at 5:30 AM British time on Wednesday. That is 7:30 AM Mogadishu time, or 12:30 AM Wednesday in Washington, DC. Somalia is seven hours ahead of Washington DC.
The Navy moved immediately. The nearest warship, the USS Bainbridge, steamed 300 miles and reached the Maersk Alabama in about 20 hours, at 3:00 AM Mogadishu time on Thursday, April 9.
A White House chronology shows that Obama did not authorize the use of force to save the freighter captain until 8:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time on Friday. That's 3:00 AM Mogadishu time on Saturday, a full 48 hours after the Bainbridge reached the vessel.
More than 67 hours. Nearly three days. Even then, it was a limited order. Obama reconsidered, and issued broader orders at about 9:20 on Saturday morning, roughly 80 hours into the crisis.
Pretty slow decision-making in a life-or-death situation. Slow to order action to save an American citizen's life. Slow to respond to a terrorist attack on an unarmed American vessel.
Weak.
Some news reports say that the Pentagon had to urge Obama twice to make a decision. Other reports say that Obama authorized the use of deadly force only if Phillips' life was in imminent danger. If true, they show that the administration doesn't understand how to send the right message to the Islamist pirates in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean.
A Maersk Alabama crewman said after news of Captain Phillips' rescue that the US shouldn't have allowed the pirates to threaten American shipping in the first place: "Tell the president to get these guys. It shouldn't come to that."
The US Navy was ready before the word "go." The sailors performed flawlessly, saving Phillips' life and Obama's credibility. Hopefully the president has learned a lesson.

Obama and Illegal Immigration...get ready
On April 12, 2009 the Dallas Morning News reported:
Also in April, the CENTER FOR IMMIGRATION STUDIES published a related (and frightening) report titled The Appearance of Security: REAL ID Final Regulations vs. PASS ID Act of 2009.
Do I need to say more about how extremely dangerous all this is for the future of this country? Once the liberals acquire this massive voting base, complete the power grab they have started, redistribute the (YOUR) wealth, and set up Obama's private army, it will be all over folks!

The announcement this week that the president will move on comprehensive immigration reform and will seek ways to legalize many of the nation's 12 million undocumented immigrants has caught both supporters and opponents by surprise.Immigration reform on Obama's list

Life in the Soviet Union (coming soon to a neighborhood near you)
Life under communism
She described her life in a communist nation: Markets were bare, people had no desire to work and the government forced young children into slave labor.
"We'd stop at the store, and the food stores were empty," she said. "I remember we had to stand in lines for hours in the cold. We were in a bus, going home and suddenly we'd see a line. We wouldn't even know what they were selling, but we knew something would be there – some food. We'd stand for two hours to buy maybe a pound of salami or a half a pound of butter."
As a young child, Taitz asked her father why the market shelves were empty.
"In America, they have everything," he would tell her. "The stores are full."
Her father explained that Americans were interested in working and received paychecks based on their productivity. However, in the Soviet Union, farmers were part of a socialist system of collective farming and were compensated equally – regardless of output.
He told her, "If a farmer is bright and hard working, at the end of the month, he will get 100 rubles. And if the farmer is a lazy bum and he does nothing, he gets the same 100 rubles."
Taitz told WND, "People had absolutely no incentive to do anything. They had no incentive to work. The best doctors were getting maybe 150 rubles. That's why the standards for medicine were so low."
Youth camps and slave labor
She said that, much like President Obama's proposed brigade of youth organizers, the Soviet Union used children for slave labor.
"They would put us on trucks, and we would go to the countryside," she said. "We were told to go and pick tomatoes."
Parents were not allowed to homeschool their children. They were forced to enroll them in government schools. From the age of 6, all children were required to become young communists.
"You had to send your child to school, and your child had to be a member of the young communists," Taitz said. "There were no children who were not members. You had to do it. If you were one of the best, you become a member of the Communist Party. It was constant brainwashing."
She continued, "There was no choice, and people resented that. They were scared to speak up."
Most children were sent to communist youth camps, but Taitz' parents wouldn't allow her to go. Instead, they gave her stacks of math, physics and chemistry textbooks to study while her friends were away at camps.
"My parents didn't want me to be in those camps and be subjected to communist brainwashing," she said. "They wanted me to think for myself. I learned to read by myself, and my parents sent me to competitions in math, physics, chemistry and biology. I would sit and work with pages of problems, and I loved to compete."
An empty existence
Practice of religion was restricted in the Soviet Union. Churches were closed and repurposed as museums of art.
"You had to be an atheist," Taitz said. "No one could go and pray. You weren't allowed to mention any religion. A lot of priests, ministers and rabbis were sent to Siberia, so people were scared. They didn't celebrate any religious holidays; they just didn't exist."
She said alcohol abuse was rampant and caused the destruction of many lives.
"One of the reasons they had such a serious problem with alcoholism was because there was nothing in people's lives. There was no God, no religion, no choice. You had to conform and comply."
During her years living in the Soviet Union, Taitz said friends would constantly talk about finding ways to break away from the system.
"They would tell me, 'This person was very inventive and built a hot-air balloon to get out from East Germany to West Germany, or somebody was able to swim across the border,'" she said. "There were always stories about how people escaped the regime."
With only one TV station in Kishinev, Taitz said reporters spewed communist propaganda.
Escaping a totalitarian regime
In 1981, when she was 21, her uncle managed to escape to Israel. He sent her family papers that allowed them to join him there due to their familial relationship.
When Taitz arrived in Israel, she was stunned to discover a free-market society with full stores. In the Soviet Union, there were no fruits or vegetables in the winter. Her family survived on canned foods, bread and pierogis, or dumplings stuffed with various ingredients such as cheese and potatoes.

Mr. Obama's Dangerous Illusion
Mr. Obama's flight to arms control demonstrates the persistence of a dangerous illusion of the 20th century -- the notion that reducing a democratic nation's armaments is a means of mitigating the threat of war. Here's some of the history:Read the whole thing: Naïveté Invites Aggression
- Beginning in 1906, Britain cut back an ambitious program of naval construction, begun under a previous administration, in the hope of thereby avoiding an "arms race" with Germany. But the change in British policy actually encouraged Germany's Adm. Alfred von Tirpitz to redouble his efforts to build a navy that would rival Britain's. This perception of British weakness may well have buttressed the confidence that led the Germans to launch World War I.
- The Washington Naval Conference of 1922 set limits on battleship construction by the U.S., Japan, Britain, France and Italy. But as a result, Japan instead focused on building other kinds of warships, paving the way for Pearl Harbor.
- Britain's policy of restraint in military production during the 1930s -- combined with the refusal of British and French governments to send forces to turn back Hitler's then weak army when it violated the Versailles Treaty by remilitarizing the Rhineland in 1936 -- did not placate Hitler. It only whetted the dictator's appetite, generating what Winston Churchill called the "unnecessary war," World War II, which might never have occurred had the Western allies maintained their armaments and a firm policy during the years that led up to it.
- The U.S. signed the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks antiballistic missile treaties with the Soviet Union in 1972, expecting they would produce a "stable" balance and ultimately a reduction in nuclear armaments. Instead the Soviets continued their race for nuclear superiority, as summed up in congressional testimony by Jimmy Carter's Defense Secretary Harold Brown in 1979: "[W]hen we build, they build. When we cut, they build." As President Ronald Reagan observed in a 1985 radio address on the Strategic Defense Initiative missile defense program the Soviets never accepted the "innocent" American notion "that being mutually vulnerable to attack was in our common interest."
- As soon as the Soviets signed the 1972 convention banning the manufacture of biological weapons, they immediately (secretly) ramped up their production of such weapons.
- The end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet empire were brought about not by arms reductions, but by Reagan's unwillingness to give up work on SDI. Soviet Prime Minister Mikhail Gorbachev recognized the Soviets simply lacked the means to compete.
