The Real Cost of Health Care

by Dick McDonald

The cost of keeping me alive for the last ten years has been astronomical. And who has been paying for it - the taxpayers of the United States. I am on Medicare and have run up probably $1 million in hospital and doctor charges of which Medicare paid $300,000 and the healthcare industry ate $700,000. Due to careful planning, I didn’t pay Medicare taxes most of my life. My contribution to the program was negligible.

The bill for my recent Gall Bladder surgery is a window into why (1) insurers make so little profit from covering health, (2) the entire medical industry is dysfunctional financially and (3) the problem is government’s intrusion into the health care industry.

Total charges                                                      $86,999.31

Amount paid by Medicare                                                             13,128.08)

Your Medicare discount                                                             (73,621.23)

Amount you paid                                                                             0.00

Total Amount You Owe                                          $   250.00

This was the charge for a three-day stay. I didn’t get the bill for my 7-way heart bypass surgery in 2002 but I assume it was a dozy too – my share was $200 for that one. I have Stage II diabetes; have had two cataract surgeries and assorted maladies all of which cost me about $10 a visit.

I don’t have to explain why Medicare is loved by the beneficiaries and eventually unsustainable financially. The bill clearly illustrates why seniors want to keep their benefits and many like me are getting benefits they didn’t even partially help cover.

Neither politicians nor the people are addressing how to solve this enormous entitlement problem. A precious few are trying to make the program solvent but only have temporary fixes that merely kick the can down the street to another Congress. There is a way to solve it but it is not on the table – that is privatizing the program which would enable people to afford these high-priced medical costs.

The unfunded cost of entitlements is presently $111 trillion dollars. There is no way to pay off this amount by raising taxes or cutting benefits without serious political consequences. Privatizing the program correctly could deliver the wealth necessary so that every American could afford the best medical care on the planet. It is tragic that the principle that the Founders built our country on – privatizing – should have been so demeaned that it now stands for destroying social programs like Medicare.

If you have the courage to fight the battle to revive our economy and straighten out the big government intrusion, join with us at to fashion the weapon that will unseat the politicians who refuse to do the right thing and work for the people.

His health broken from over a year in the British prison, Richard Stockton died bankrupt at age 51, FEBRUARY 28, 1781. New Jersey placed his statue in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall.

Richard Stockton wrote in his Will: "As my children...may be peculiarly impressed with the last words of their father, I think proper here, not only to subscribe to the entire belief of the great leading doctrine of the Christian religion...but also in the heart of a father's affection, to exhort them to remember 'that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.'"

Attorney Gary Kreep of the United States Justice Foundation discusses Obama's eligibility to be President

An attorney whose legal brief in a case challenging Barack Obama’s eligibility revealed a Supreme Court can remove an ineligible chief executive now has released an analysis confirming that if Obama isn’t eligible, he could be charged under a number of felony statutes.

And that’s just on the federal level; any state charges would be in addition, as would charges against individuals who may have helped him in the commission of any of the acts, according to Gary Kreep of the United States Justice Foundation.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: 2/27/1807

"Listen my children and you shall hear of the midnight ride of Paul Revere..Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch...One if by land, two if by sea..."

These lines are from the poem, Paul Revere's Ride by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, born FEBRUARY 27, 1807. An American poet and Harvard Professor, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote such American classics as: The Song of Hiawatha; The Courtship of Miles Standish and Evangeline, in which he penned: "Man is unjust, but God is just; and finally justice triumphs."

In A Psalm of Life, 1838, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote: "Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal; Dust thou art, to dust returnest, Was not spoken of the soul...In the world's broad field of battle, In the bivouac of Life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife! Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act,-act in the living Present! Heart within, and God o'erhead! Lives of great men all remind us, We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us, Footprints on the sands of time;-Footprints, that perhaps another, Sailing o'er life's solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again."

Victor Hugo: 2/26/1802

"God is behind everything, but everything hides God," wrote Victor Hugo in his classic Les Miserables, Book 5, Chapter 4.

Born FEBRUARY 26, 1802, Victor Marie Hugo was hailed as the greatest of the Romanticists poets. He is best know for writing Cromwell, 1827, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, 1831, and Les Miserables, 1862, an epic story of redemption set in Paris during the French Revolution.

Hugo's father was a general in Napoleon's army and Hugo supported his heir, until he turned out to be a tyrant. Hugo opposed him and was forced into exiled for 19 years. Over 3 million people attended Hugo's funeral in Paris.

In his Preface to Cromwell, 1827, Victor Hugo wrote: "Lastly, this threefold poetry flows from three great sources-The Bible, Homer, Shakespeare...The Bible before the Iliad, the Iliad before Shakespeare." Victor Hugo stated: "England has two books, the Bible and Shakespeare. England made Shakespeare, but the Bible made England."

George H.W. Bush stated at the Dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Dallas, Texas, November 11, 1989: "Victor Hugo said 'Nothing can stop an idea whose time has come.' Well, my fellow veterans, the idea is democracy."

John Foster Dulles: 2/25/1888

"Our institutions reflect the belief of our founders that all men were endowed by their Creator with inalienable rights...They believed that human institutions ought primarily to help men develop their God-given possibilities," thus stated Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, who was born FEBRUARY 25, 1888, in the home of his Civil War general grandfather.

A graduate of Princeton, John Foster Dulles studied law at George Washington University, was an Army Major in WWI and a U.S. Senator. He was advisor to Truman and Secretary of State for Eisenhower. A Presbyterian pastor's son, Dulles negotiated the Peace Treaty with Japan and was U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C., is named for him.

Speaking on Communism, John Foster Dulles remarked at the Jesuit Alumni Dinner, April 11, 1955: "Man, we read in the Holy Scriptures, was made a little lower than the angels. Should man now be made little higher than domesticated animals which serve the purpose of their human masters? So men face the great dilemma of whether to use force to resist aggression which imposes conditions which violate the moral law and the concept that man has his origins and his destiny in God."

Physician: Two-thirds of ObamaCare passed in stimulus package...

A nationally-recognized physician has written a stunning article in which she says that two-thirds of the government takeover of healthcare is already law under the provisions of the stimulus package approved by Congress last year.

She further asserts that the bill that is now being debated, which Obama unleashed yesterday morning, is the dreaded 'third rail' that will effectively seize the remaining third of the industry that is not under government control.

In 13 days, all defenders were dead, including William Travis, Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie. Only Susanna Dickenson, her baby, and Travis' servant survived.

Fifteen years earlier, Mexico won independence from Spain and set up a democratic Federal Constitution. In 1833, Santa Anna rejected the Constitution, became dictator and suppressed Mexican Federal States which rebelled: San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, Durango, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Yucatán and Jalisco. In Zacatecas, Santa Anna defeated Francisco Garcia, took 3,000 prisoners and let his army ransack the city 48 hours.

Mexican Federal General José Antonio Mexía marched from New Orleans to Tampico to fight Santa Anna, but was defeated. Santa Anna executed every prisoner.

The Texas Declaration of Independence stated "General Antonio Lopez Santa Anna...having overturned the constitution of his country, now offers, as the cruel alternative, either abandon our homes...or submit to the most intolerable of all tyranny...He denies us the right of worshipping the Almighty according to the dictates of our own conscience."

Government, Yes! God and Parents, No!

Just as the left has substituted the authority of the state for the authority of God, it has substituted the authority of the state for that of parents. And just as God has been reduced to a non-judging, non-disciplining pal, so, too, the left wants parents to become non-judging, non-disciplining pals of their children.

In a nutshell, the left wants to have ever-expanding authority over people's lives through ever-expanding governmental powers. It does so because it regards itself as more enlightened than others. Others are either enemies (the right) or unenlightened masses. It is elected by demonizing its enemies and doling out money and jobs to the masses.

The Obama Administration’s Health Care Proposal

This morning the Obama Administration released a description of its health care proposal, and CBO has already received several requests to provide a cost estimate for that proposal. We had not previously received the proposal, and we have just begun the process of reviewing it—a process that will take some time, given the complexity of the issues involved. Although the proposal reflects many elements that were included in the health care bills passed by the House and the Senate last year, it modifies many of those elements and also includes new ones. Moreover, preparing a cost estimate requires very detailed specifications of numerous provisions, and the materials that were released this morning do not provide sufficient detail on all of the provisions. Therefore, CBO cannot provide a cost estimate for the proposal without additional detail, and, even if such detail were provided, analyzing the proposal would be a time-consuming process that could not be completed this week.

George Washington: 2/22/1732

He was unanimously chosen as the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army in 1775, unanimously chosen as President of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, and unanimously chosen as the first President of the United States in 1789.

After the Declaration of Independence was read to his troops, July 9, 1776, General Washington ordered chaplains placed in each regiment, stating: "The General hopes and trusts, that every officer and man, will endeavor so to live, and act, as becomes a Christian Soldier, defending the dearest Rights and Liberties of his country."

In his Inaugural Address, April 30, 1789. Washington said: "It would be peculiarly improper to omit, in this first official act, my fervent supplications to that Almighty Being who rules over the universe...No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than the people of the United States. Every step by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation seems to have been distinguished by some token of Providential agency."

After his Inauguration, President George Washington attended the "divine service" conducted by U.S Senate Chaplain Samuel Provoost in New York City's St. Paul's Chapel.

Protect yourself: find your true vocation

...Too many business people "have cut short their careers just before breaking into senior management in order to ‘serve God full time,'" Tonkowich notes. Despite their talk about all work being sacred, their own decisions deny their words.

How do we get back a biblical view of work? We can start with an essay by Dorothy Sayers entitled "Why Work." As Sayers writes, Christians "must get it firmly into their heads that when a man or woman is called to a particular job of secular work, that is as true a vocation as though he or she were called to a specific religious work."

One thinks of a good friend of Sayers, C.S. Lewis, whose "secular" work at Oxford included writing a series of children's books that have for generations pointed children to Christ: The Chronicles of Narnia.

Sayers believed that work "should be looked upon—not as a necessary drudgery...but as a way of life in which the nature of man should find its proper exercise and delight and so fulfill itself to the glory of God."

This is why it is so important that Christian young people find out what their vocation is—whether it be law, medicine, ministry, or some other field—and do the work that God designed them to do.

How do we figure that out? We should ask ourselves what we are good at, what we have a passion for, what God has gifted us in. In what kind of work do we find great spiritual, mental, and bodily satisfaction?

That, Sayers says, is a good indication of the work we should seek out.

Finding the work that God intends us to do may protect us from one of the great temptations of our times: consumerism. Doing our work well, and finding great satisfaction in it, Tonkowich notes, will "keep us from the need to drown out our unhappiness in...[all] the assorted amusements our paycheck can purchase."

The Uniform Holiday Bill

The Uniform Holiday Bill, signed by President Lyndon Johnson in 1968, moved the celebration of George Washington's Birthday to the third Monday in FEBRUARY. Sometime after this, with Lincoln's birthday also being in the month of February, people began referring to the holiday as "Presidents' Day."

Of note is that Presidential tradition is to swear into office with a hand upon the Bible, end the oath of office with "So help me God" and acknowledged a Supreme Being in the Inaugural Address. Eisenhower, Reagan and George H.W. Bush also included prayers.

President Eisenhower began his Inaugural Address in 1953: "My friends, before I begin...would you permit me the privilege of uttering a little private prayer of my own. And I ask that you bow your heads. Almighty God, as we stand here at this moment..."

In 1985, Ronald Reagan began his Inaugural Address: "I wonder if we could all join in a moment of silent prayer..."

George H.W. Bush began his Inaugural Address, 1989, saying: "My first act as President is a prayer. I ask you to bow your heads. Heavenly Father, we bow our heads and thank You for Your love...Make us strong to do Your work, willing to heed and hear Your will..."

The Melting Case For Carbon Legislation

Important update from The Energy Tribune!

What's really criminal is that Obama still plans to push through his Cap-and-Trade legislation, in spite of all of the new revelations about climate fraud. And remember, in a 2007 video, he said that this legislation would necessarily cause energy prices to skyrocket! How in the world does he not see how cruel this would be to middle and lower class families? How many children and elderly will have to die before someone removes this terrible fraud from office?

"...if Obama is so brilliant, why does he parrot the words and thoughts of a bunch of schmucks like Karl Marx, Saul Alinsky, Al Gore and Michael Moore?"

Why does he insist that the trouble with the Constitution and the civil-rights movement is that they didn't focus on the redistribution of wealth? Why would he hand over the federal budget to a couple of morons like Pelosi and Reid? And why on earth would he put Henry Waxman in charge of his energy program? A brilliant person wouldn't trust Waxman to bring baked beans to a picnic.

When someone decides to model a health-care plan after such dismal failures as England, Canada and Cuba, while exhuming the failed economic policies of FDR, why would anyone suggest he is anything but a left-wing ignoramus?

This is an American president, for heaven's sake, who has more in common with Noam Chomsky, Hugo Chavez and some Berkeley hippie than he has with Washington, Jefferson and Adams. Except that he is now 30 years older, Obama seems to think exactly the same way he was thinking back in college, when he was a pot-smoking idiot who sought out students who were self-professed revolutionaries and professors who were communists.

If we have come to a point where the ability to read scripted lines off a teleprompter is considered a sign of brilliance, no matter how fatuous the actual words may be, we are in even worse shape than I imagined.
Is Obama Really Brilliant?

The Empire strikes back

When tea party, 9/12 and townhall protests and rallies first erupted on the national scene, they were derided by national politicos as astroturf or a small fringe movement. Lefty journalists at MSNBC, CNN and elsewhere laughed away the movement with derogatory, pornographic references.

Then, Scott Brown won election to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts. No one is laughing anymore. In fact, Democrats are facing political annihilation this November. Not only do Democrats face the possibility of losing their congressional majorities, massive losses in state house races could jeopardize redistricting next year and set back the progressive agenda for at least a decade.

So, the Clinton Empire is planning to strike back.

Big Government has learned that Clintonistas are plotting a “push/pull” strategy. They plan to identify 7-8 national figures active in the tea party movement and engage in deep opposition research on them. If possible, they will identify one or two they can perhaps ‘turn’, either with money or threats, to create a mole in the movement. The others will be subjected to a full-on smear campaign. (Has MSNBC already been notified?)

Big Government has also learned that James Carville will head up the effort...

William Prescott: 2/20/1726

A Revolutionary War Colonel, he built the fortifications at Breed's Hill and commanded the militia at the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775. He fought in the Battle of Long Island in 1776 and the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. His name was William Prescott, born FEBRUARY 20, 1726.

After the Boston Tea Party, where colonists threw 342 chests of British East India tea overboard, Parliament passed the Boston Port Bill, blockading the harbor and starving the inhabitants. The Committee of Correspondence sent word to the other Colonies, who called a Day of Fasting and Prayer, June 1, 1774, "to seek divine direction and aid."

In August of 1774, William Prescott led the men of Pepperell, Massachusetts, to deliver loads of rye to Boston's inhabitants, telling them: "We heartily sympathize with you, and are always ready to do all in our power for your support, comfort and relief, knowing that Providence has placed you where you must stand the first shock."

William Prescott continued: "We consider that we are all embarked in (the same boat) and must sink or swim together. Let us all be of one heart, and stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free. And may He, of His infinite mercy, grant us deliverance of all our troubles."

Adoniram Judson: 2/19/1812

The groans of a dying man kept him awake in the little inn outside New York, but he was hardened to the cries because a college friend at Brown University had persuaded him to be an atheist. The next morning he learned the man who died in the night was none other than his college friend. This rude awakening led him to become America's first foreign missionary.

His name was Adoniram Judson, born in Massachusetts, August 9, 1788. At age 23, Adoniram Judson, and his wife, Ann, age 22, set sail from New England on FEBRUARY 19, 1812. Arriving in Calcutta, India, the British East India Tea Company did not want missionaries evangelizing Hindus as it might hurt their business, so the Judsons were ordered to Rangoon, Burma. They learned to speak Burmese, translated Scriptures and started schools.

Adoniram was imprisoned during the Burmese War, but eventually gained respect from Burmese and British officials for having translated an English-Burmese Dictionary and the Bible. By Adonirum's death, there were 63 churches, 123 ministers and over 7,000 baptized Christians in Burma.

Adoniram Judson wrote: "How do Christians discharge this trust committed to them? They let three fourths of the world sleep the sleep of death, ignorant of the simple truth that a Savior died for them."

Bill Clinton Plotting Tea Party Counterattack

Dear Fellow Tea Party Patriots,

Andrew Breitbart is reporting that former President Bill Clinton and James Carville are planning a counter offensive against the tea party movement. According to, their plans are to identify 7- 8 national figures active in the tea party movement and engage in a smear campaign against them. You can read more on Clinton's plans at the link below.

Clinton Plans

Clearly, the liberals, and especially Bill Clinton, still do not yet understand the tea party movement, which began 1 year ago this week with the Porkulus Protest in Seattle and Rick Santelli's rant in Chicago. The tea party movement has tens of thousands of leaders across this great land, not just 7 or 8. There are patriots shining the light of fiscal responsibility, free markets and constitutionally limited government from shore to shore.

Our leaders are tea party organizers, patriots that make phone calls and send emails to their elected officials, bloggers, and activists that take time out of their lives to attend tea parties, the list goes on and on. We are the sleeping majority that has awakened.

The tea party movement is like a starfish with many legs. You cut one of us off, and another will grow to take their place.

We patriots know that we are fighting for the principles that our freedom loving nation was founded on. We are just ordinary people reclaiming America's founding principles. We are a diverse group that comes from every walk of life and ethnic background. We all have one thing in common and that is we love freedom - economic freedom and freedom from big government and massive government deficits.

We have decided to go on the offensive and make it easy for former President Clinton and James Carville to identify tea party leaders. We have created a web site for you to upload videos to. We hope to collect videos from thousands of patriots telling former President Clinton and James Carville that they are tea party leaders. Film the videos at home, soccer fields, grocery stores and other locations that are indicative of the diversity of the tea party movement. There is strength in numbers.

Record your video saying only "I am the tea party leader". Please do not make any statement other than the one listed or it will not be posted. Upload your video to the web site below. Visit the web site to view videos of other patriots and to find out more information.

The Dangerous Question That’s Not Just for Presidents

Phil at explains in detail why Erick Erickson at is wrong about birthers (he has banned them from his site) and why Erick's response to John Charlton at The Post & Email is flawed.
I started this blog back on Friday, October 24, 2008 with the simple question: Is Barack Hussein Obama eligible for the presidency? Of course, as long-time readers have noted, I have since expanded to other topics, but who would have thought that such a simple question would stir such a major controversy?

Then again, in politics, isn’t it true that if there’s no “there” there, why make such a big deal about the question? Some of we bloggers, including myself, post as a hobby and happen to have garnered a fair amount of support from the blogosphere to make such a pursuit worthwhile. If it is merely we who are asking the question, what’s the big deal — why so much consternation over eligibility?

Let’s begin with prominent RedState blogger Erick Erickson, a Macon, GA councilman, lawyer, and someone who has over the past few months been featured on Hannity’s America as well as the mainstream news network CNN (incidentally, I applaud his good fortune in this respect, despite the fact that he’s wrong on eligibility). He posted this initial promise of banning those of us who question the administration, of which I will now dissect:

Doing it the Right Way: Last week, President and CEO of the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA) John Goodman and Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the House, responded to President Obama's call for "better ideas" by offering Ten GOP Health Ideas for Obama. Published in The Wall Street Journal, Goodman and Gingrich's ideas included a number of sensible solutions, such as encouraging more equitable tax treatment of health insurance, increasing portability and eliminating junk law suits.

Goodman/Gingrich Blog for Health Care Summit: In a bid to break the logjam on health reform, the President will convene a health care "summit" on February 25. He has invited Republicans and Democrats alike to participate. Although there is some question about what the summit can accomplish and whether it will serve any purpose other than political grandstanding, both Republicans and Democrats say they will come prepared to debate health reform. John Goodman and Newt Gingrich will be hosting a blog discussion in the days leading up to the summit, as well as a continuous, live blog during the summit.

Sneaky, Sneaky, Sneaky: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is at it again. Late last week, Pelosi announced that Democrats "have set the stage" for reconciliation. Pelosi's proposed use of reconciliation, a legislative tactic which would empower 50 Senators-rather than 60-to pass ObamaCare, is viewed by many Americans as dirty politics. Amazingly, even Pelosi's senior health advisor, Wendell Primus, referred to the reconciliation process as a trick. Here's how Pelosi's sordid strategy would work:

Step 1: The House Passes "Fixes." As of late 2009, both House and Senate had passed versions of health care legislation. However, these versions differed in several important respects. To move past this impasse, House Democrats would get the ball rolling by passing a number of modifications to the Senate version of health care reform.

Step 2: The Senate Passes the "Fixes." Senate Democrats would follow Pelosi's lead, endorsing the House's modifying legislation and sending it to the President's desk.

Step 3: The House Passes the Senate Bill. House Democrats would then pass the Senate version of health care reform as it is-thus bypassing the need for a subsequent Senate vote-and offer it to the President for signature or veto.

Step 4: The President Signs (and Combines). In an unprecedented lawmaking slight-of-hand, the President would sign the Senate version of health care and subsequently sign the modifying legislation, the "fixes."

The reconciliation process is an arcane budgetary process, used traditionally to reconcile the differences between expected revenues (taxes) and expenditures (spending). Customarily, lawmakers pass legislation and, if reconciliation is required, subsequently pass modifying bills. As an approach to the legislative process, reconciliation is rarely used and, more importantly, has never been used in the way that Pelosi proposes. Pelosi's stratagem fails the 'what's right' test in two meaningful ways:
  • Procedure: Reconciliation Bypasses Senate Rules. Reconciliation would deprive Senators of the opportunity to fully participate in the legislative process. The Senate has long-held that 60 votes are required to pass substantive law. Now, Pelosi and Reid are trying to avoid that rule because of political expediency. Simply put, that's not right.
  • Substance: Reconciliation Bypasses Senate Debate. While Republicans as well as Democrats have used reconciliation in the past, it's never been used for legislation of the cost and scale of health care reform. For many Americans, health care reform is literally a matter of life-and-death; they deserve a comprehensive debate of the issues in the bill.
The Final Wave! Thanks to your support, the NCPA has now entered its third wave of communication targeted to fence-sitting members of Congress. Pilgrim's Progress: 2/18/1678

Pilgrim's Progress was published FEBRUARY 18, 1678. An allegory of a pilgrim traveller named "Christian" journeying to the Celestial City, it was written by John Bunyan, born in Bedford, England.

At age 29, Bunyan became a Baptist minister and was imprisoned over 12 years for preaching without a license. While in jail, he supported his family by making shoelaces. His book, found in nearly every colonial New England home, was the world's best-seller for centuries.

Benjamin Franklin wrote in his Autobiography: "From a child I was fond of reading, and all the little money that came into my hands was ever laid out in books. Pleased with the Pilgrim's Progress, my first collection was of John Bunyan's works in separate little volumes."

Franklin continued: "My old favorite author, Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress...has been translated into most of the languages of Europe, and suppose it has been more generally read than any other book, except perhaps the Bible."

In it, John Bunyan wrote: "Christian ran thus till he came at a place somewhat ascending, and upon that place stood a cross...So I saw in my dream, that just as Christian came up with the cross, his burden loosed from off his shoulders, and fell from off his back."

Billy Sunday: 2/17/1889

A baseball star, Billy Sunday played for the Chicago White Stockings from 1883 to 1891.

Born during the Civil War in a log cabin in Iowa, his father, a Union Army soldier, died of pneumonia when Billy was only a month old. At age 15, he struck out on his own, working several jobs before being recruited to play pro baseball by pitcher and club owner, Albert Spalding, founder of Spalding Sporting Goods. Billy Sunday's career took off and he was one of the most popular athletes in the nation.

In 1887, he and his teammates were walking the streets of Chicago after drinking a few beers, when Billy Sunday heard an old gospel hymn sung at a street corner meeting of the Pacific Garden Mission. He began attending and there experienced conversion. He then went to YMCA meetings, quit drinking and got married.

A sensation occurred FEBRUARY 17, 1889, when Billy Sunday preached his first sermon as an evangelist. He went on to pioneer radio broadcasting so enthusiastically that the FCC was formed in response.

In the next 46 years, till his death November 6, 1935, over 100 million people would hear him. Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson met with him. In his animated style, Billy Sunday said: "Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than going to a garage makes you an automobile."

Eugenics and America

Excerpts below from "The Horrifying American Roots of Nazi Eugenics"
California was considered an epicenter of the American eugenics movement. During the Twentieth Century's first decades, California's eugenicists included potent but little known race scientists, such as Army venereal disease specialist Dr. Paul Popenoe, citrus magnate and Polytechnic benefactor Paul Gosney, Sacramento banker Charles M. Goethe, as well as members of the California State Board of Charities and Corrections and the University of California Board of Regents.
In 1904, the Carnegie Institution established a laboratory complex at Cold Spring Harbor on Long Island that stockpiled millions of index cards on ordinary Americans, as researchers carefully plotted the removal of families, bloodlines and whole peoples. From Cold Spring Harbor, eugenics advocates agitated in the legislatures of America, as well as the nation's social service agencies and associations.

The Harriman railroad fortune paid local charities, such as the New York Bureau of Industries and Immigration, to seek out Jewish, Italian and other immigrants in New York and other crowded cities and subject them to deportation, trumped up confinement or forced sterilization.

The Rockefeller Foundation helped found the German eugenics program and even funded the program that Josef Mengele worked in before he went to Auschwitz.
Hitler studied American eugenics laws. He tried to legitimize his anti-Semitism by medicalizing it, and wrapping it in the more palatable pseudoscientific facade of eugenics. Hitler was able to recruit more followers among reasonable Germans by claiming that science was on his side. While Hitler's race hatred sprung from his own mind, the intellectual outlines of the eugenics Hitler adopted in 1924 were made in America.

During the '20s, Carnegie Institution eugenic scientists cultivated deep personal and professional relationships with Germany's fascist eugenicists. In Mein Kampf, published in 1924, Hitler quoted American eugenic ideology and openly displayed a thorough knowledge of American eugenics. "There is today one state," wrote Hitler, "in which at least weak beginnings toward a better conception [of immigration] are noticeable. Of course, it is not our model German Republic, but the United States."
"War Against the Weak"?

"Those who actively supported eugenics include America's most progressive figures: Woodrow Wilson, Margaret Sanger and Oliver Wendell Holmes."

Sanger, Margaret. "Woman and the new race." New York: Brentano's, c1920. [250 pages]:

"Among our more than 100,000,000 population, are Negroes, Indians, Chinese and other colored people to the number of 11,000,000...Do these elements give promise of a better race? [and] are we doing anything genuinely constructive to overcome this situation?"

Excerpts below from "Margaret Sanger Was Against Abortion?"
...Certain statements by Sanger are absolutely striking because they were statements I did not expect.

Statements such as this, found in a letter about the “Negro Project” were well expected:

We should hire three or four colored ministers, preferably with social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities. The most successful educational approach to the Negro is through a religious appeal. We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.[1]

Or this, in a written statement to a congressional department:

Keep the doors of immigration closed to the entrance of certain aliens whose condition is known to be detrimental to the stamina of the race, such as feebleminded, idiots, morons, insane, syphilitic, epileptic, criminal, professional prostitutes, and others in this class barred by the immigration laws of 1924.

Apply a stern and rigid policy of sterilization and segregation to that grade of population whose progeny is already tainted or whose inheritance is such that objectionable traits may be transmitted to offspring.[2]

She also wrote:

It is a vicious cycle; ignorance breeds poverty and poverty breeds ignorance. There is only one cure for both, and that is to stop breeding these things. Stop bringing to birth children whose inheritance cannot be one of health or intelligence. Stop bringing into the world children whose parents cannot provide for them. Herein lies the key of civilization. For upon the foundation of an enlightened and voluntary motherhood shall a future civilization emerge.[3]
Then, the most inexplicable statement of all was this:

“While there are cases where even the law recognizes an abortion as justifiable if recommended by a physician, I assert that the hundreds of thousands of abortions performed in America each year are a disgrace to civilization.[7]

In her 1938 autobiography, Sanger notes that her 1916 opposition to abortion was based on the taking of life:

“To each group we explained what contraception was; that abortion was the wrong way—no matter how early it was performed it was taking life; that contraception was the better way, the safer way—it took a little time, a little trouble, but was well worth while in the long run, because life had not yet begun.”[8]

2009: Arabs deny U.S. citizens their rights

Is it coincidence that Dearborn, the city with the highest density of Muslims in the US, is the one place we've found where even asking questions is impossible? Where simply representing Christianity, let alone preaching it, is prevented on public streets? Where security can commit many accounts of battery, and allow others to do so as well? Where minors are recruited by guards to entrap unsupspecting people? If Islam grows in the United States, is this what will become of our nation?

"Man has forgotten God, that is why this has happened" was Solzhenitsyn's response when questioned about the decline of modern culture.

A Russian author, Solzhenitsyn was imprisoned for eight years by Joseph Stalin, as he described in his autobiography, Les Prix Nobel: "I was arrested on the grounds of what the censorship had found in my correspondence with a school friend, mainly because of certain disrespectful remarks about Stalin, although we referred to him in disguised terms. A further basis for the 'charge' were drafts of stories and reflections which had been found in my map case."

Solzhenitsyn was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1970 for writing The Gulag Archipelago, but the Communist government did not allowed him to leave the country to accept it. Finally, under international pressure, the Soviet Union expelled him on FEBRUARY 13, 1974.

The following year in Washington, D.C., Alexander Solzhenitsyn warned: " upon America to be more careful..because they are trying to weaken disarm your strong and magnificent country in the face of this fearful threat-one that has never been seen before in the history of the world."

College student shoots home invader, saves 10 lives...

Yet another reason to keep a gun in the house!

Several months ago, in the notoriously dangerous neighborhood of College Park in Atlanta, Georgia, two armed criminals broke into a house party of students.

After confiscating the group's valuables, the invaders split the men and women up into different rooms.

Witnesses say the perpetrators then counted their rounds and discussed if they had "enough" ammunition.

The students believe the gunmen were going to rape and murder the entire group of students, who were celebrating a birthday at the end of the semester.

However, one male student, whose identity is being protected by police and local media, retrieved a handgun from his backpack and fired at the thug who was detaining the men.

(That is: One smart student had prepared for a night in College Park, Atlanta.)

The criminal fled the apartment under the threat of injury and never returned.

The student, continuing on into the girls' room, found the other thug, 23-year-old Calvin Lavant, preparing to rape his first victim.

The student exchanged gunfire with Lavant, lethally wounding him in the process. Lavant fled through a window and died in front of his apartment, only one building away.

One of the female students was injured during the exchange, but doctors expect a full and complete recovery.

So what's the point

A student saved the girls from rape, and saved the whole group of 10 people (including himself) from murder . . . and he did it with a handgun.

This is a perfect example of how ludicrous "big city gun laws" are. What if this had happened in New York, Chicago, or any of the other big cities that criminalize their citizens' self defense?

Yes, we would be reading an entirely different story -- one so horrendous that we would shudder at the very words.

Either this whole group of friends would have been raped and murdered by these two sorry excuses for human beings . . . or the hero of this story would be facing prison time for firearm possession and murder.

Thankfully, however, Atlanta hasn't outlawed self-defense yet. And since someone had a gun and was willing to use it, innocent life was preserved.

Congratulations to the unnamed hero of this story. You saved your friends' lives.

When Deficits Become Dangerous

Welcome to our great fiscal Titanic! Here are a few highlights from this WSJ article today:
Mr. Obama and Congress added hundreds of billions of dollars a year of ineffective "stimulus" spending—more accurately characterized as social engineering and pork—when far more effective, less expensive options were available.

The Obama 10-year budget—unprecedented in its spending, taxes, deficits and accumulation of debt—is by a large margin the most risky fiscal strategy in American history. [emphasis mine] In his Feb. 1 budget message, Mr. Obama said, "We cannot continue to borrow against our children's future." But that is exactly what he proposes to do.

Former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker famously called Reaganomics—with its defense buildup, tax cuts and budget deficits—a "riverboat gamble." (Which, by the way, worked out well.) Mr. Obama's fiscal strategy is more akin to the voyage of the Titanic. Let's hope he changes course soon enough to prevent disaster.

All we are left with now is three more years of the president’s “Bush did it” mantra and a buffoonish Robert Gibbs...

Obama is not merely flipping and triangulating on issues in a desperate attempt to shadow the polls, but he is doing so on matters that he once swore were absolutely central to his entire candidacy and his signature hope-and-change agenda, critical to the future of the U.S., and proof of his opponents’ either ignorance or disingenuousness...After a single year of governance, there is now scarcely a single issue that Obama & Co. have not backtracked on, flip-flopped, redefined, or quietly dropped — mostly matters that were once demagogued to score political points.
The Truth Is a Precious Commodity

On FEBRUARY 11, 1861, newly elected President Abraham Lincoln left Springfield, Illinois, for the U.S. Capital, never to return. In his Farewell Speech he said: "I now leave, not knowing when or whether ever I may return, with a task before me greater than that which rested upon Washington. Without the assistance of that Divine Being who ever attended him, I cannot succeed. With that assistance I cannot fail."

Lincoln continued: "Trusting in Him who can go with me and remain with you, and be everywhere for good, let us confidently hope that all will yet be well...Let us all pray that the God of our fathers may not forsake us now.."

Forty-five days before his assassination, Lincoln stated in his Second Inaugural Address, March 4, 1865: "Both read the same Bible and pray to the same God...The prayers of both could not be answered...If God will that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsmen's two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said 'the Judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.'"

How to Think About the Healthcare Debate?

by Michael Daily

Pastor and former Executive Director of the Pregnancy Resource Center of Metropolitan Richmond (VA)
Perhaps the key insight relevant to the healthcare debate is this: when the executive branch consolidates for itself the power of the judicial and legislative functions (as is now the case with federal agencies) the effects of all other institutions are marginalized. When these other institutions are marginalized, what is lost are the sources of positive moral transformation. Thus proceeds a populace spiraling downward, less and less able to care for themselves, who then turn to government to solve their problems, while the head of the government utilizes the opportunity to become more powerful and entrenched in office.

In my opinion, this has already taken place to a considerable degree...

Obama Submits Largest Budget in History, But Networks Portray Him as Fiscal Conservative

President Obama just submitted a $3.8 trillion budget proposal, the largest federal budget ever, which will come with a "record amount of red ink." The projected deficit of that budget would be $1.6 trillion, yet the networks didn't criticize him for being spendy.

To put this in perspective: Obama is proposing a budget $700 billion larger than big spender Pres. George W. Bush's last budget. It's TWICE the size of Pres. Bill Clinton's last budget of $1.9 trillion, who was credited with generating a budget surplus.

Despite the "staggering" size of Obama's budget, which broadcast networks admitted was "dripping with red ink," the reports managed to paint him as a fiscal conservative and deficit slasher.

F.A. Hayek, an Austrian economist living in Britain, wrote "The Road to Serfdom

" in 1944 as a warning that central economic planning would extinguish freedom...The book was a hit. Reader's Digest produced a condensed version that sold 5 million copies.

Hayek meant that governments can't plan economies without planning people's lives. After all, an economy is just individuals engaging in exchanges. The scientific-sounding language of President Obama's economic planning hides the fact that people must shelve their own plans in favor of government's single plan.

At the beginning of "The Road to Serfdom," Hayek acknowledges that mere material wealth is not all that's at stake when the government controls our lives: "The most important change ... is a psychological change, an alteration in the character of the people."

This shouldn't be controversial. If government relieves us of the responsibility of living by bailing us out, character will atrophy. The welfare state, however good its intentions of creating material equality, can't help but make us dependent. That changes the psychology of society.

I'll explore this tomorrow night on my Fox Business show, 8 p.m. Eastern (rebroadcast Friday at 10 p.m.).

The Founders did not Grant the Federal Judiciary the Power to Interpret the Constitution

Jamie Glasov: Mr. Beck, thank you for having the courage and integrity to tell the truth about communism...Glenn Beck, you are a hero to me! we have a best friend in the West who has our back. We aren’t orphans anymore. There is a certain individual in this land, by the name of Glenn Beck, who has a television show on the Fox News Channel with a mass following; he is masterfully exposing this phenomenon that we experienced — and are still experiencing. He is telling the truth about the Soviet regime and about communism and he is beaming a light on leftists and liberals for their long romance, which continues till this day, with communist systems and the ideologies that brought them into place. Just recently, Beck’s program featured his profound documentary, The Revolutionary Holocaust, which powerfully illustrates the evil of communism and the leftist ideals that brought its horrors into existence. Beck’s documentary exposes the crimes against humanity perpetrated by mass murderers such as Che Guevara and Mao Zedong, who, till this day, enjoy great idolization in leftist milieus and, as we know, in the Obama White House itself.

I would like to take this moment to express my deepest and heartfelt gratitude to Glenn Beck...

Frank Rich and the State of Liberal Commentary

by Dennis Prager
If one had to read one columnist to appreciate the state of contemporary left-wing commentary, my nomination would be Frank Rich of the Sunday New York Times.

No well-known leftist columnist better exemplifies the worst aspects of today's left. Virtually every piece is filled with anger, filled with ad hominem responses to arguments, filled with insults of opponents and at the same time devoid of intellectual arguments. A Frank Rich column is essentially a weekly tantrum meant to make his readers nod in agreement and reinforce their contempt for those who differ with them.

I offer this past Sunday's column as an example...

Who was the first President to die in office?

"Tippecanoe and Tyler too" was the campaign slogan of 9th President William Henry Harrison, born FEBRUARY 9, 1773. He was the first President to die in office, serving the shortest term of only 30 days.

The son of Benjamin Harrison, signer the Declaration, and grandfather of Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd President, William Henry Harrison was aide-de-camp to General "Mad Anthony" Wayne, who defeated the British and Indian forces at the Battle of Fallen Timbers.

Harrison became Secretary of the Northwest Territory - 260,000 square miles from which was formed Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. He was the area's first delegate to Congress and in 1801 became Governor of the Indiana Territory. Harrison disrupted Chief Tecumseh's confederation at the Battle of Tippecanoe.

In his Inaugural Address, 1841, William Henry Harrison stated: "I deem the present occasion sufficiently important and solemn to justify me in expressing to my fellow citizens a profound reverence for the Christian religion, and a thorough conviction that sound morals, religious liberty, and a just sense of religious responsibility are essentially connected with all true and lasting happiness."

American Minute with Bill Federer

What would a person legitimately correct 45 years after the birth – after having used that birth certificate for 45 years whenever documentation was needed and never challenging the facts contained on it?

The President should keep uppermost in his mind the biblical admonition as to what happens to those trees that do not bear "good fruit". The axe is already at the tree...

Obama’s West Wing is filled with people who are in their jobs because of their Chicago connections or because they signed on with Obama early during the presidential campaign.

One problem is that they do not have sufficient experience at governing at the executive branch level.

The deeper problem is that they are not listening to the people.

Hearing is one thing; listening is another.

Some are even questioning whether Mr. Obama has forgotten how he got elected and the promises he made to the people who elected him.

Don't take my word for any of this. Look at the clear message the American people have been sending at the polls these past few months.
