You are confusing "personal standard" with "symbol" ... Merriam-Webster does not even list them as synonyms for each other's definitions.

On Wikipedia's page for Hindenburg there is not one single symbol pictured anywhere for him:

On Hitler's Wikipedia page his "symbol" (the swastika) appears in two places: once as a component of the standard and once in the picture to the right of the section called "Brüning administration":
