NO ICE WATER FOR DOGS!!

The vet stated that giving a dog ice to chew or ice water is a big NO, NO! There is no reason for a dog to have ice/ice water. Normal water at room temperature, or cooling with cold towels on the inner thigh, is the best way to help cool a dog. The vet explained it to me like this: If you, as a person, fall into a frozen lake what happens to your muscles? They cramp. This is the same as a dog’s stomach.

I felt the need to share this with everyone, in the hopes that some may learn from what I went through, I do not wish this on anyone. Baran is home now doing fine. So please, if you do use ice and ice water, beware of what could happen.

Citizens fight back against dumping of illegals in our country

Press Release: Law offices of Orly Taitz

The public can make a difference.

We have seen an earthquake in DC when the House Majority leader went down in flames for his support of amnesty. Time for the public to act. Corrupt Obama regime created a crisis in banning deportation of children through an unconstitutional executive order, which goes against the US immigration laws and against the best interests of this nation. This ban on deportation of illegals became a magnet for hundreds of thousands of illegals. Now Obama is seeking 2 billion dollars for their accommodation.accommodation. After incurring 7 trillion dollars of additional debt, Obama is seeking more money to pay for his anti-American policies. The public can make a difference and stop Obama’s destruction of this nation.
  1. Public is urged to call every congressman and demand “NO” on any funding for accommodation of illegals. Congress has to pass a resolution seeking immediate deportation of all illegals and sanctions against the nations of origin for the full cost of deportation of their citizens. US assessed sanctions against Russia, which is half a world away. US can issue sanctions against Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Venezuella and stop issuing any and all visas for citizens of these countries, stop importation of all products from these countries an freeze the bank account of their leaders until they pay for the deportation and repatriation of their citizens who invaded the US.

  2. The public is urged to contact the governors and Attorney Generals of every state and demand immediate deployment of the National guard of every state to stop the invasion of illegals and demand an immediate legal action against Barack Obama and Obama regime, seeking repayment of the cost of apprehension of illegals and the cost of up-keeping of illegals, as well as Ex Relator status from the court to step in the shoes of the Federal Government, which is derelict in its duties and assume the function of deportation of illegals. Anti-American policies of Obama cost US jobs and bankrupted the Social Services of multiple states.

  3. Demand criminal investigation of individuals who are complicit and aiding and abetting violation of the US immigration laws, such as the owner of face-book Mark Zuckerberg and stock trader George Soros.

  4. If members of the public would like to be a part of a civil RICO challenging Obama, contact attorney Orly Taitz at orly.taitz@hushmail.com. Taitz is working pro bono. Donations can be given by pay-pal at www.OrlyTaitzESQ.com or www.TaitzReport.com or by mail at 29839 Santa Margarita, ste 100, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA 92688

LORD O THE FLIES

A cowboy from Texas attended a social function where Barack Obama was trying to gather support for his Health Plan. When Obama discovered the cowboy was from President Bush's home area, he started to belittle him by talking in a southern drawl and single syllable words.

As he was doing that, he kept swatting at some flies that were buzzing around his head. The cowboy says, "Y'all havin' some problem with them circle flies?"

Obama stopped talking and said, "Well, yes, if that's what they're called, but I've never heard of circle flies."

"Well, sir," the cowboy replies, "Circle flies hang around ranches. They're called circle flies because they're almost always found circling around the back end of a horse."

"Oh," Obama replies as he goes back to rambling. But, a moment later he stops and bluntly asks, "Are you calling me a horse's ass?"

"No, sir," the cowboy replies, "I have too much respect for the citizens of this country to call their president a horse's ass."

"That's a good thing," Obama responds and begins rambling on once more.

After a long pause, the cowboy, in his best Texas drawl says,

"Hard to fool them flies, though."

US Quietly Moves 12 Detainees Out Of Secretive Afghanistan Prison!

First it was the five top Taliban commanders traded for the traitor Bowe Bergdahl. Now this. The traitor in the White House seems determined to endanger Americans by releasing as many jihadis as he can. It’s no wonder that these releases were not publicly announced.

But no worries: the Pakistanis say they’ll monitor these jihadis to make sure they don’t have any “militant ties.” That’s right: the pro-jihad Pakistani government will make sure that everything is fine.

Cancer patients fly free (multiple resources)

I have a friend who has been accepted for treatment at NIH (National Institute of Health) and needs financial assistance for he and his wife to travel to Bethesda, Maryland. Here's some resources that help if you or anyone you know find themselves in this same situation:
To get the best care possible, sometimes cancer patients need to travel to treatment facilities that are far away from their homes. Traveling long distance for cancer treatments can be both exhausting and cost-prohibitive, potentially eliminating available treatments options for some patients. To help alleviate this burden, there are organizations who offer FREE air travel services for cancer patients, many on private jets.

Most groups who offer this free travel assistance require that the patient be ambulatory (able to walk and get into/out of the plane with little or no assistance) and be medically stable as the pilots are not able to provide any medical assistance. While some groups require proof of financial need, others do not. Typically, patients are allowed to be accompanied by one family member or support person.

The left in America began as a political insurgency. Now it runs everything.

The GOP doesn't actually believe in anything. It's been through too many changes over the years. It's become a big tent for fiscal and social conservatives, as long as they don't actually try to set policy, for foreign policy hawks, as long as they don't push for anything Democrats are opposed to, and for an assortment of constituencies that add color and identity, but don't actually get their way.

Republicanism has become a bland colorless conservatism that stands for some sort of competence and a vague commitment to smaller government and a stronger national defense which exists in theory, not in practice. It's for morals, until they become too unfashionable. It's for apple pie, as long as it's not too fattening. It's for proving that the left is unfair to call it a crazy bunch of extremists.

In placid times, that can work. Ideology is tiresome and no one likes being yelled at. It's why the left does so poorly in most elections. But in troubled times, people want something to believe in. They don't want the hollow assurances of hollow men that everything is fine when it clearly isn't.

That's when the Republican Party actually has to stand for something and explain why it stands for it.

Neither party actually does that except in the vaguest of ways, but the public rightly senses that there is a system of coherent beliefs behind Obama. Many of them would run screaming for the exits if they had those beliefs spelled out for them, but they're not details people. They respond to passion and certainty. They like knowing that a candidate is animated by something more than careerism.

The public rightly sensed that there was no such system behind McCain or Romney. Both men believe things, but they're big on being pragmatists. Their beliefs adapt to the situation. They have their own moral centers, but it's not ideological. Their passions are personal, not political.

The Tea Party changed that.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The National Park Service is launching an initiative to make places and people of significance to the history of lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual Americans part of the national narrative.

Michelle Malkin reports.

Monday, June 02, 2014

This really might lead to Obama's impeachment

Taliban prisoner swap was ILLEGAL claims GOP as former federal prosecutor says it could lead to Obama's impeachment:
  • The president ignored a law – which he signed last year – requiring him to notify Congress 30 days before releasing anyone from Guantanamo Bay
  • The Obama administration never told Capitol Hill until after Bergdahl was in American custody and the US Taliban prisoners were preparing to leave
  • A former federal prosecutor told MailOnline that while the 30-day-notice law is probably unconstitutional, putting enemy combatants back in a position to harm Americans is an impeachable offense
  • A White House insider said Obama administration officials didn't anticipate how controversial Bergdahl's rescue would be, and compared it to the 1981 release of 52 US hostages in Iran
  • Since Saturday several of Bergdahl's former military comrades have said he was an Army deserter, and some have speculated that he also aimed to join with the Taliban in Afghanistan
  • An official Pentagon report concluded in 2010 that Bergdahl 'walked away,' so little effort was made to retrieve him, according to the AP

Put your car keys beside your bed at night.

Tell your spouse, your children, your neighbors, your parents, your Dr's office, the check-out girl at the market, everyone you run across. Put your car keys beside your bed at night.
If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies.
This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage.
If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick around. After a few seconds, all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there. This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime.
P.S. I am sending this to everyone I know because I think it is fantastic. Would also be useful for any emergency, such as a heart attack, where you can't reach a phone. My Mom has suggested to my Dad that he carry his car keys with him in case he falls outside and she doesn't hear him. He can activate the car alarm and then she'll know there's a problem.
Please pass this on even IF you've read it before. It's a reminder.

Will Israel be the first cashless society on the entire planet?

Will Israel be the first cashless society on the entire planet?  A committee chaired by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s chief of staff has come up with a three phase plan to “all but do away with cash transactions in Israel”.  Individuals and businesses would still be permitted to conduct cash transactions in small amounts (at least initially), but the eventual goal is to force Israeli citizens to conduct as much business as possible using electronic forms of payment.  In fact, it has been reported that Israeli officials believe that “cash is bad” because it fuels the underground economy and allows people to avoid paying taxes.  It is hoped that requiring most transactions to be conducted in cash will reduce crime and help balance the national budget.  And once 98 or 99 percent of all transactions are cashless, it will not be difficult for the Israeli government (or any other government) to go the rest of the way and ban cash transactions altogether.  But is a cashless society actually desirable?  This is a question that people all over the world will have to start asking as governments increasingly restrict the use of cash.

Memorial Day was started by former slaves on May 1, 1865 in Charleston, SC

KNOW YOUR HISTORY:
Memorial Day was started by former slaves on May, 1, 1865 in Charleston, SC to honor 257 dead Union Soldiers who had been buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp. They dug up the bodies and worked for 2 weeks to give them a proper burial as gratitude for fighting for their freedom. They then held a parade of 10,000 people led by 2,800 Black children where they marched, sang and celebrated.
Thanks to Abstrakt Goldsmith for this nugget of history that most of us never learned in school.

Progressives Today

ProgressivesToday.com
Jim Hoft, the founder and proprietor of The Gateway Pundit, and Kyle Olson, the founder EAGnews.org have joined forces in a new online project “Progressives Today.”

Many Americans who consider themselves left of center have an antiquated sense of today’s Democrat party. This is not their father’s Democratic party. Democrats today are controlled by, and answer to, the most radical elements of their party. Yet, with cover generously provided by the mainstream media, progressives are able to push their influence in the shadows. And they have no shame.

Progressives Today follows and publicly exposes the radical elements of the institutional left. It will be the go to resource for all elements of the progressive movement through old school investigative journalism. We will cover their conferences with undercover reporters, we will interview their leaders, we will follow their writings, teachings, social media presence. Our goal is to finally hold the left accountable for their radical opinions, their destructive policies and their dangerous anti-American agenda.

One of the goals of PT, in addition to simply exposing progressives, is to expose their views to moderates and Democrats so that a choice must be made. It is our strong belief that, Progressives Today will cause many on the left to re-evaluate their political alliances.

WARNING FOR PET OWNERS

Please protect the pets from the heat!!! A message from LA Animal Services!

Pet Safety in EXTREME Heat.

According to composer George Gershwin, summertime means “the livin’ is easy; fish are jumpin’, and the cotton is high.” This special season can also mean we need to protect our companion animals from extreme heat.

Keep in mind that when it is hot for you, it is even hotter for them. Dogs and cats do not sweat through their skin. They cool themselves by panting or rapid breathing, which means animals must work hard to stay cool.

Too much heat can be extremely dangerous or even fatal. If your best friend has a shorter nose, like Persian cats and bulldogs, he is more susceptible to heatstroke than breeds with longer noses.

If your dog or cat begins very rapid, noisy breathing, has trouble swallowing, and looks very distressed, she could be having a heatstroke. Heatstroke is an emergency. Get the animal out of the heat. Apply cold, wet towels to the back of the head. Place cold packs wrapped in towels or plain wet towels between the back legs and on the belly. Cool off your furry friend and then take her to the vet immediately.

The best plan is to keep your dog and cat protected from the summer heat.

Always make sure that your dog or cat has plenty of fresh water to drink. A bucket that holds a gallon or more of water will stay cool longer than water in a shallow pan. Some dogs consider ice cubes a treat, and you can add a few to the water bowl.

Dogs and cats do sweat a little through the pads of their feet. The cats I know do not appreciate water added to any part of their body, but dogs often enjoy having cool water on their feet. Some dogs enjoy walking through or even lying in a child’s wading pool.

It is dangerous to leave your dog or cat in a car for 5 minutes. If he cannot go inside at every stop with you, he is safer at home on hot days! Car interiors heat very quickly in the hot sun, even with the windows open. If it is 85 degrees outside, it will climb to 102 degrees inside your car within ten minutes. In half an hour, it will reach 120 degrees or more! If it is 90 degrees out, temperatures can top 160 degrees faster than you can walk around the block.

While walking your dog outdoors, pay particular attention the hot pavement or sidewalks that make your dogs walking area hotter and can even burn their feet. Early morning and later evening walks will be more comfortable for you both!

Animals who go outside need access to shade. Dark coats absorb heat. Lighter coated animals, especially white ones, are at higher risk for skin cancer from exposure to the sun and they are more susceptible to sunburn.

Longer coated dogs and cats who are brushed regularly have natural insulation from the heat. However, if the coat has gotten matted, a summer clip will make your buddy much more comfortable and allow you a new start at keeping him brushed. Remember, newly clipped animals can be sunburned.

If your dog spends time in the yard, make sure she has access to shade. Shade trees, a covered patio, or a cool spot under the porch can help keep her comfortable.

Companion animals want to be with you. They will be safer and cooler inside with you, where they can spend their time doing what they do best: being your best friend!

THE BIG MAN

Dr. Jack Wheeler:
MALABO, Equatorial Guinea – It took coming here, to the darkest pit of hellhole Africa, for it to finally dawn on me who Obama really is, to what total extent he isn’t American at all, but African.
Freedom House, in its 2014 Worst of the Worst report, highlights Equatorial Guinea as “one of the world’s most repressive societies.” Its dictator, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, is a murderer who ran the Black Beach Prison where countless prisoners were tortured to death. He has ruled since 1979, declared himself to be his country’s God who “can decide to kill without anyone calling him to account and without going to Hell” in 2003, and was elected by leaders of the 54 member-states of the African Union (AU) to be its chairman in 2011.
His picture is everywhere in the country:
Obiang uses his country’s oil revenue as his personal piggy bank, enriching his friends and family while the average citizen of his country lives on $1 a day. He has a number of presidential palaces and bought a $31 million dollar home in Malibu, California, (and a $15 million dollar apartment in Paris) for his playboy son Teodorin, whom he is grooming to succeed him.
But there is nothing at all exceptional about him. He is merely yet another example of what in Africa are called Big Men – narcissistic, charismatic sociopaths who gain power however they can, never let go of it, look upon themselves as demi-gods for whom ordinary morality does not apply, utterly convinced they deserve to be worshiped with total obedience and to live in complete extravagance while being completely indifferent to the poverty of others.
Remind you of anyone in America?

Liberals Must Choose Between Freedom And Fascism:
Honest liberals are having their Andrew Breitbart moment. Andrew started out as a liberal, except he was the kind of liberal that’s exceedingly rare today. He was a liberal who actually believed in the things liberals say they believe in, like free expression and personal autonomy.
But they don’t.
Andrew’s change began when he watched the Clarence Thomas hearings. He saw a “high-tech lynching,” as racist Democrats intent on stamping out dissent among black Americans channeled their former Majority Leader/KKK Exalted Cyclops Robert Byrd in attacking the black jurist for refusing to toe the liberal line.
Andrews’s views didn't change. What changed was his understanding of who actually stands for freedom. And it isn’t liberals.

Because of the roadblock on I-15, people refused to be searched, and refused to turn back. They just pulled off the road and parked. It was like a dam backing up a river. Soon the feds were trapped between the Americans who had already gotten through, and the Americans who had been stopped on the highway. The BLM agents went into full panic mode and called for help. LVPD [Las Vegas Police Department] who had REFUSED to show up to help Americans HAD to show up to rescue BLM that was now trapped and helpless. The blockade was SEVEN MILES LONG! That’s a potload of people . . .

There were THOUSANDS of people there, and more arriving every minute. The ranch, Gold Butte, the entire area was completely surrounded by Americans. The highway was completely blocked in both directions of people trying to get through. Everyone was very peaceful and friendly. No fights or anything. There was a rumor in the line, that some of the mercenaries hired by the feds had defected and were now on the side of the Americans.

I came back and immediately saw this [the media's] pack of lies and half truths.

At one point, I-15 was closed in both directions, about seven miles south of Mesquite, because protesters had blocked the freeway. Nearly two dozen police officers and a SWAT unit were at the scene to keep the peace and assist the BLM enforcement officers to safely leave the area. They were scared crapless!

There are laws about sex?

If you’re contemplating sex with a rodeo clown in Massachusetts, watch out: The long arm of the law may be coming for you. Mustachioed men, it’s probably best if you just avoid Indiana altogether. And ladies, you don’t have to put up with your lover’s bad breath anymore—in Minnesota, you are legally protected from the smell of garlic and onions.

Think these laws are weird? We’re just getting started. These bizarre rules of attraction give a whole new meaning to the term “penal code.”

HALLELUJAH: not just a song anymore - UPDATE

Father Ray Kelly of Meathe has taken the internet by storm, and captured the essence of this amazing song like no other before:

Irish priest astounds at wedding with incredible rendition of 'Hallelujah'

Ashley Fetters, writing for The Atlantic (12/04/2012), presents a fascinating account of Alan Light's new book The Holy or the Broken: Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley, and the Unlikely Ascent of "Hallelujah": A new book traces the the song's strange rise to pop-cultural ubiquity.

You may still prefer the Leonard Cohen original, or some of the others along the way that are chronicled below with videos. I didn't like Jeff Buckley's until I listened a second time--am fascinated with his teeth!--and I really liked Alexandra Burke's "X Factor" version. But Father Kelly proves Cohen's companion/collaborator Anjani Thomas wrong when she said, after hearing k.d. lang perform 'Hallelujah' at the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2006: "I think we can lay that song to rest now! It's really been done to its ultimate, blissful state of perfection."

You be the judge:

How Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' Became Everybody's 'Hallelujah'

UPDATE:

New from THE JEWISH STANDARD [We are the oldest independent weekly Jewish newspaper in New Jersey. Based in Teaneck, we cover Bergen, Hudson, and Passaic counties and beyond.]
You probably wouldn't believe us if we told you the IDF produced the best version of Leonard Cohen's Halleluja ever. So here it is. You be the judge.

Two New Studies Raise Red Flags on Obamacare

The Fiscal Times:
When the next round of premium increases hits over the summer, and the market for employer-provided health insurance undergoes the same kind of massive disruption as the individual market did over the last six months, the debate over the honesty and integrity of the Obama administration may hit new levels of intensity.

No connection between education spending and student outcomes!

SANTA FE, N.M. – For decades, it’s probably the most troublesome question facing education: Why are results for U.S. public school students so mediocre, despite the billions of taxpayer dollars spent?

Andrew Coulson thinks he’s got the answer: Because there is no discernible correlation between spending and outcomes.

You can't have a truce when the other side wants a war

Daniel Greenfield:
The left does not care about gay marriage. In most left-wing regimes, homosexuality was persecuted. It was illegal in the USSR. Gay men were locked up in Cuba and are still targeted in China. Nicolas Maduro, the current hero of the left, openly uses homophobic language without any criticism from his Western admirers. It goes without saying that homosexuality is criminalized throughout the Muslim world.

Engels viewed homosexuality as a perversion born out of the bourgeois way of life that would be eliminated under socialism. The Revolutionary Communist Party of the United States stated that homosexuality “is a product of the decay of capitalism” and vowed that once the revolution took place, a “struggle will be waged to eliminate it and reform homosexuals.”

The left’s shift on this issue, as on many issues, was purely tactical. The left’s leading lights were racists who jumped into civil rights. They were sexists who became feminists. They were advocates for the working class who despised the idea of working for a living.

The culture war does not emerge from the left’s deeply held beliefs. Its leaders could care less about the things that they pretend to care about. It emerges instead from the need to maintain a constant state of domestic conflict.

Supreme Court may invalidate Obamacare sometime before June, 2015

Population control?

Making Economic Sense by Murray Rothbard (Chapter 41 - Population "Control") excerpt:
In fact, population generally follows movement in standards of living; it doesn't cause them. Population rises when the demand for labor, and living standards rise, and vice versa. A rising population is generally a sign of, and goes along with, prosperity and economic development. Hong Kong, for example, has one of the densest populations in the world, and yet its standard of living is far higher than the rest of Asia, including, for example, the thinly populated Sinkiang province of China.

England, Holland, and Western Europe generally have a very dense population, and yet enjoy a high living standard. Africa, on the other hand, most people fail to realize, is very thinly populated. And no wonder, since its level of capital investment is so low it will not support the existence of many people. Critics point to Rwanda and Burundi as being densely populated, but the point is they are the exceptions in Africa. The city of Rome at the height of its empire, had a very large population; but during its collapse, its population greatly declined. The population decline was not a good thing for Rome. On the contrary, it was a sign of Rome's decay.

The world, even the Third World, does not suffer from too many people, or from excessive population growth. (Indeed, the rate of world population growth, although not yet its absolute numbers, is already declining.) The Third World suffers from a lack of economic development due to its lack of rights of private property, its government-imposed production controls, and its acceptance of government foreign aid that squeezes out private investment. The result is too little productive savings, investment, entrepreneurship, and market opportunity. What they desperately need is not more UN controls, whether of population or of anything else, but for international and domestic government to let them alone. Population will adjust on its own. But, of course, economic freedom is the one thing that neither the UN nor any other bureaucratic outfit will bring them.

Classic Koch

The real truth.

Wall Street Journal:
Instead of encouraging free and open debate, collectivists strive to discredit and intimidate opponents. They engage in character assassination. (I should know, as the almost daily target of their attacks.) This is the approach that Arthur Schopenhauer described in the 19th century, that Saul Alinsky famously advocated in the 20th, and that so many despots have infamously practiced. Such tactics are the antithesis of what is required for a free society—and a telltale sign that the collectivists do not have good answers.

Rather than try to understand my vision for a free society or accurately report the facts about Koch Industries, our critics would have you believe we're "un-American" and trying to "rig the system," that we're against "environmental protection" or eager to "end workplace safety standards." These falsehoods remind me of the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan's observation, "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts." Here are some facts about my philosophy and our company:

What was the original intent of the Second Amendment?

Excerpt from THE HISTORY OF THE SECOND AMENDMENT
by DAVID E. VANDERCOY:
English history made two things clear to the American revolutionaries: force of arms was the only effective check on government, and standing armies threatened liberty. Recognition of these premises meant that the force of arms necessary to check government had to be placed in the hands of citizens. The English theorists Blackstone and Harrington advocated these tenants. Because the public purpose of the right to keep arms was to check government, the right necessarily belonged to the individual and, as a matter of theory, was thought to be absolute in that it could not be abrogated by the prevailing rulers.

These views were adopted by the framers, both Federalists and Antifederalists. Neither group trusted government. Both believed the greatest danger to the new republic was tyrannical government and that the ultimate check on tyranny was an armed population. It is beyond dispute that the second amendment right was to serve the same public purpose as advocated by the English theorists. The check on all government, not simply the federal government, was the armed population, the militia. Government would not be accorded the power to create a select militia since such a body would become the government's instrument. The whole of the population would comprise the militia. As the constitutional debates prove, the framers recognized that the common public purpose of preserving freedom would be served by protecting each individual's right to arms, thus empowering the people to resist tyranny and preserve the republic. The intent was not to create a right for other (pg.1039) governments, the individual states; it was to preserve the people's right to a free state, just as it says.

Ministers...pastors...spiritual leaders: this is for all of you

One of my favorite books describes the anguish of a man who felt and followed the call. It reminds me of something Glenn Beck said within the last several years about Christian leaders ducking the responsibility of telling the truth to their flocks.

By Taylor Caldwell

Excerpt, page 103, “Soul Seven, The Betrayer” (1960)

He waited. No one answered him. Then something rose in him like the high and thundering swell of a wave. He fought it down, but it rose high and higher, and out of its smothering he cried, “’Profession!’ I call it ‘profession’! But it is a calling—a calling!—isn’t it? That is what my father said—‘a holy calling’!”

He put the heels of his hands hard over his eyes. “Oh, my God,” he murmured. “To think that there were people long ago who thought God ‘called’ them! Now we gravely consider the impulse we have toward the ministry and wonder if we are well rounded enough, and fully psychologically educated, and adjusted, to become ministers of the Gospel! Are we good administrators? Do we like people? Do people instinctively like us? Are we excellently grounded in the social ethic? Do young people naturally gravitate toward us? Are we expert businessmen? Do women like us? Are we liberal in our ideas? Do we have good voices which inspire confidence? Can we meet men on their own ground easily and confidently, whether it is the golf course, the broker’s office, the club, the family living room, the parish hall, the community activities, the schools, the theater, the good restaurants? In short, are we ‘good fellows, sweet guys, regular people’? Are we enthusiastic about sports and take an active part in them? Are we ‘broad’? Men of ‘diversified’ interests? Conversant with television? Are we on the board of this and that? In short, are we ‘active’?”

He stood up, looking about him with a kind of wild hopelessness. “In short,” he cried, “must we be everything but ministers of the Gospel?”

The white walls were lined with his questions.

What is the Resurrection?

While the priest was presenting a children's sermon he asked the children if they knew what the Resurrection was.

Now, asking questions during children's sermons is crucial, but at the same time, asking children questions in front of a congregation can also be very dangerous.

In response to the question, a little boy raised his hand.

The priest called on him and the boy said,
"I know that if you have a resurrection that lasts more than four hours you are supposed to call the doctor."

The Population Control Holocaust

Excerpt from Robert Zubrin's new book Merchants of Despair: Radical Environmentalists, Criminal Pseudo-Scientists, and the Fatal Cult of Antihumanism:
Around the world, the population control movement has resulted in billions of lost or ruined lives. We cannot stop at merely rebutting the pseudoscience and recounting the crimes of the population controllers. We must also expose and confront the underlying antihumanist ideology. If the idea is accepted that the world’s resources are fixed with only so much to go around, then each new life is unwelcome, each unregulated act or thought is a menace, every person is fundamentally the enemy of every other person, and each race or nation is the enemy of every other race or nation. The ultimate outcome of such a worldview can only be enforced stagnation, tyranny, war, and genocide. The horrific crimes advocated or perpetrated by antihumanism’s devotees over the past two centuries prove this conclusively. Only in a world of unlimited resources can all men be brothers.
That is why we must reject antihumanism and embrace instead an ethic based on faith in the human capacity for creativity and invention. For in doing so, we make a statement that we are living not at the end of history, but at the beginning of history; that we believe in freedom and not regimentation; in progress and not stasis; in love rather than hate; in life rather than death; in hope rather than despair.

Make college students take (real) history

Several years ago I gave a lecture at the University of Washington on the situation of women in ancient Rome.  Afterwards, two co-eds asked me about the Roman Empire. Where and when was it, they wanted to know.

Thinking this was some sort of tease, I told them it ruled Southern California in the 1920s. I was stunned when they began to write that down.

So, after I explained about Rome, I quizzed them further, to test what they did know about history.

There are a number of major historical falsehoods that now flourish in the politically correct environment that prevails on our college and university campuses.

Not much, it turns out.

They did not know in what century the Civil War had occurred, they had never heard of the Crusades, and they guessed that D-Day might be a Roman Catholic holiday.

These were intelligent young women who earned good grades. But they had never taken any history courses (not even in high school) and didn’t expect to take any, since the university no longer had such a requirement.

In fact, most colleges no longer require any history. Those that do often require only a course in American history. Unfortunately, even these courses often teach little of basic American history.

Consider Texas, which requires all state schools to require and teach two courses in American history. A recent assessment of how these requirements are often met is depressing. Each of the following listed courses was deemed to satisfy the requirement:
- “History of Mexicans in the U.S.”
- “The Black Power Movement”
- “Mexican-American Women, 1910-present,”
- “Race and Revolution”
-“The United States and Africa”

These may be intellectually respectable courses, but they cannot possibly provide students with a basic education in American history.

Perhaps that explains the young Dallas lawyer who asked me in an airport what I was reading on my Kindle. When I replied, “A book on the War of 1812,” he responded, “Who fought in that one?”

There are worse things than not requiring history courses or only offering those limited to a tiny slice of the subject, and that is to teach malicious nonsense. Sadly there are a number of major historical falsehoods that now flourish in the politically correct environment that prevails on our college and university campuses.

One is that ancient Greece stole its advanced culture from black Egyptians. This is wrong on several levels. The only black people living in ancient Egypt were slaves, not rulers or intellectuals.  And despite being able to build pyramids, Egyptian culture was far behind that of the Greeks, as the historian Herodotus made quite clear at the time.

Another falsehood often peddled in our universities is that Muslim societies forged far ahead in science while Europe suffered through the Dark Ages. Again, not so.

In reality the “Dark Ages” is a myth. Many of the important inventions that put Europe ahead of the rest of the world were made during this era. Moreover, whatever sophisticated culture existed in Muslim nations during medieval times was primarily the culture of the Jews, Christians, Persians, and Hindus living under Muslim rule. That helps explain why Muslims societies have had to import all their technology from the West in recent years.

Yet another myth holds that Europe got rich by stealing its wealth from its colonies in the non-Western world. The reality is that the volume of trade involved between Europe and its colonies was too small to have had any significant impact on European economies.

Further, while some Europeans did get rich through trade with non-Western colonies, Europeans as a whole lost a great deal of money. For instance, British taxpayers shouldered the immense costs of the Royal Navy and foreign civil service that made the colonial system possible, while just a small number profited from colonial trade.

The list of poisonous, fake history peddled in higher education goes on and on: The United States started the Cold War. The American Indians were pacifists until the White man taught them to make war. The Civil War was about economics, not slavery. Harry Truman was a war criminal.

It’s time to address this campus claptrap and get back to teaching at least the basics of American history and, hopefully, some world history too.  Let’s stop graduating bright students who can be led to believe that Los Angeles was the capital of the Roman Empire.

Rodney Stark is co-director of the Institute for Studies of Religion at Baylor University. His latest book is "How the West Won: The Neglected Story of the Triumph of Modernity" (Intercollegiate Studies Institute, March 17, 2014).
