The text of this volume has been divided into four parts. The first three describe a movement-how it started, what became its objectives, and to what extent those objectives were reached . These three parts are entitled : Currents, Tides, and-The Flood. The fourth part tells of the rising waters of a more recent stream, whose mounting effect gives the title to the book . Parts I, III and IV are by John Howland Snow . Part II is by the Hon . Paul W . Shafer of Michigan, Member of Congress from 1937 until his death in 1954 . The original text was delivered in the House of Representatives on March 21, 1952. Approximately two years were required for the preparation and publication.

PART I - CURRENTS - The Early Movement

On the 12th of September 1905 a group of young men met together in lower Manhattan, New York . Conditions in America were not ideal . These young men had an ideal. Consciously or not, it had been borrowed from the social structures of the Old World . The meeting took place in a loft above Peck's Restaurant, at 140 Fulton Street. Among the group were some who in later years were to become widely known for views which at that time were the catalyst bringing them together . On that day nearly sixty years ago was organized the Intercollegiate Socialist Society.

Common Core is about, as David Feith would say "an obsession with race, class, gender, and sexuality as the forces of history and political identity." Nationalizing education via Common Core is about promoting an agenda of Anti-capitalism, sustainability, white guilt, global citizenship, self-esteem, affective math, and culture sensitive spelling and language. This is done in the name of consciousness raising, moral relativity, fairness, diversity, and multiculturalism.

Mexican Nazis

By the way, whenever will Mexican Nazis be called racists?  Fox disclosed this week (12/17) that the school district of Salinas, California intends to name an elementary school after a murderous 19^thcentury Mexican bandit, Tiburcio Vasquez.  This is straight out Orwellian Marxist racism, another attempt to portray a murdering thug as an anti-white, anti-America hero like Che Guevara.

So I have a suggestion for TTPers.  That you email or call the hate-America racist responsible for this, John Ramirez, Superintendent of the Alisal Union School District, and politely ask that he stop making his school infamous and an object of ridicule - and instead, name this school after a true 19^th century Mexican-American hero and patriot.

That would be Romualdo Pacheco (1831-1899) - the first and to this day only Hispanic governor of California.  He had an extraordinary career as you can read in the link - being, just for example, one of the first politicians in California to denounce slavery, and the only California Governor to have roped a grizzly bear.  Not even Ronald Reagan can claim that!

Strangely, not a single California school has yet been named after him - although the Governor Romualdo Pacheco Elementary School in Indio (near Palm Springs) is scheduled to open next year.

The Salinas Peace Officer Association has condemned Ramirez's honoring a murdering bandit, while the Monterey County Deputy Sherriff Association has expressed "extreme disappointment."  You could contact them as well with the suggestion of Gov. Pacheco.

So Superintendent Ramirez, by making his decision immediate, could be the first to honor California's only Mexican-American governor - and be praised instead of denounced and laughed at.

There is however an important connection between Gov. Pacheco and the bandit Vasquez.  When Vasquez was finally captured and found guilty of murder by trial jury in January, 1875, he was sentenced to death by hanging.  In early March, he appealed to the state's new governor, who had just taken office on February 27, for clemency.  The appeal was denied, and on March 19, 1875, Vasquez was hung.  The governor who denied the appeal was Romualdo Pacheco.

Did you know: Muslims discovered America?

Well, your kid probably does!

Harvard is one of eighteen universities that receive government funding under Title 6 of the Higher Education Act. To qualify for that funding, the universities are required to conduct outreach to K-12 teachers, helping them shape lessons from schoolchildren. The teachers think they’re getting expert insight from university scholars about Islam and the Middle East. They may be getting much more.

The Saudi government has donated millions to Middle East centers at universities that receive Title 6 funding. For example, the Harvard Center received a $20 million dollar donation from Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal in 2005. The Prince also gave Georgetown $20 million that same year. . . .

Among the textbooks the Harvard Center recommends for school children is the Arab World Studies Notebook. The book is published by Arab World and Islamic Resources, a Saudi-funded group in New Mexico. The notebook has come under fire for negatively portraying America and Israel while white-washing Islam. It’s been banned by some school districts. . . One of the notebook’s most controversial claims is that Muslims made it to the New World before Columbus. It states that some native-American chiefs even had Muslim names.

Do you think the changes mentioned at the end of this video will make everything ok again (just like it used to be when kids were taught that Columbus discovered America?)

The Catastrophe of Public Education

What H.G. Wells says in his famous statement above is quite true. History is a race between education and catastrophe. Unfortunately, the manner in which education is delivered in the United States, and in other countries of the Western World, through public institutitions, now is itself the catastrophe. Rather than preventing a larger historical catastrophe, public education is now promoting and contributing to just such a thing.

This is not exactly news. It was already realized early in the 1980's (the federal report, "A Nation at Risk," 1983) that students were graduating from high school, and often from college, without knowing much of anything. Sometimes they were functionally illiterate, especially from inner city schools. Alarms were continually sounded through the 1990's, such as with Thomas Sowell's splendid Inside American Education, The Decline, The Deception, the Dogmas [The Free Press, 1993]. But now, after a good thirty years, and with some marginal improvements in some places, the general problem is just as bad, if not in certain respects worse. With some regularity, polls seem to show that graduates know little about history, government, literature, science, economics, geography, etc.

In the 80's, it was easily recognized that one problem with the schools was just the "dumbing down" of the curriculum. Less and less was expected of students, often deliberately, so as not to damage their self-esteem; and, indeed, international surveys showed that American students felt better about themselves, even when their performance was dismal in international comparisons. Students from say, Korea, felt worse about themselves but accomplished much more. This was a trend that should have been reversed just as easily as it was recognized. But it wasn't. In 1988, E.D. Hirsch published a book, Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know, talking about the essential general knowledge that education should be conveying; but the educational Establishment ignored this.

Nor is this just an American phenomenon. Theodore Dalrymple, a British psychiatrist practicing at a public hospital and a prison, in his marvelous Life at the Bottom: The Worldview That Makes the Underclass [Ivan R. Dee, 2003], remarks that he didn't know what disturbed him more, that the young toughs of his experience were tatooing themselves with swastikas, or that they actually didn't know, thanks to British education, who had actually used the swastika (the Nazis) and what they had done (dictatorship, war, mass murder). His regular experience with the young patients he saw was that they knew little about anything.

Why this has all happened is not all that mysterious, nor why it has proven so difficult to reverse the trend. There has just not been the political will, or perhaps even the political means, to accomplish reform -- with a smokescreen of lies and deceptions confusing the matter. Indeed, I believe that the system is simply unreformable, and the only solution is to allow students and parents to escape it.

The root of the problem can be summarized in three terms: (1) teachers' unions, (2) education schools, and (3) the federal government. Each of these has become its own rent-seeking and bureaucratic institution, following a dynamic, well described by Public Choice Economics, that serves themselves as institutions but bears little relation to what most people would think of as the purposes of education, let alone public education. The most disturbing feature of this dynamic is the extent to which ignorance promotes the control and purposes of the educational establishment better than the successful dissemination of knowledge would. . .
