MUSICAL HISTORY - GEORGE GERSHWIN LIVE in 1924!

Listen closely to this wonderful composer-pianist playing live in 1924!

Original acoustic recording 10th June 1924 of George Gershwin's classic composition with Gershwin at the piano. Released on both sides of a 12'' 78 rpm record Amazing sound quality for an acoustic recording from the clarinet glissando ( played by Ross Gorman who played it as a joke for Gershwin during rehearsals for the première, Gershwin liked it so it stayed) the piano and orchestra. Gershwin and Whiteman recorded it electrically 21st April 1927. Paul Whiteman commissioned George Gershwin to write him an extended piece aiming to be the first artist to perform an all jazz concert at the Aeolian Hall in New York. He set a target of February 1924. Gershwin refused saying there wasn't enough time, however in early January 1924 his brother Ira brought to his attention an article in the New York Tribune about the concert stating that George was working on a 'Jazz Concerto'.

Gershwin spoke to Whiteman the next morning and was told Vincent Lopez was planning to steal the idea of the concert. Gershwin finally won over set about the work on January 7th and had it completed in a few weeks, Ferde Grofe, Whiteman's arranger was given the score to orchestrate. The concert went ahead on 12th February 1924 with Gershwin at the piano.

Breath of Heaven (Mary's Song) by Amy Grant...is breath taking.

Amy Grant Breath of Heaven (Mary's Song) - The Nativity Story from Kristy Honsvick on Vimeo.
This Christmas song tells the nativity story from Mary's perspective. It portrays the mother of Jesus as a frightened young girl, attempting to deal with the circumstances of giving birth to the Holy Father's Son. Despite her human doubts, Mary's faith in the goodness and mercy of God remain and help her deal with the unique situation she finds herself in. English songwriter Chris Eaton originally penned this song, with the title "Breath of Heaven." (Released on Amy Grant's holiday album in 1983.) READ MORE

Breath Of Heaven (Mary's Song)
from the album Home for Christmas
I have traveled many moonless nights
Cold and weary with a babe inside
And I wonder what I've done
Holy father you have come
And chosen me now to carry your son

I am waiting in a silent prayer
I am frightened by the load I bear
In a world as cold as stone
Must I walk this path alone?
Be with me now
Be with me now

Breath of heaven
Hold me together
Be forever near me
Breath of heaven
Breath of heaven
Lighten my darkness
Pour over me your holiness
For you are holy
Breath of heaven

Do you wonder as you watch my face
If a wiser one should have had my place
But I offer all I am
For the mercy of your plan
Help me be strong
Help me be
Help me

Breath of heaven
Hold me together
Be forever near me
Breath of heaven
Breath of heaven
Lighten my darkness
Pour over me your holiness
For you are holy

Breath of heaven
Hold me together
Be forever near me
Breath of heaven
Breath of heaven
Lighten my darkness
Pour over me your holiness
For you are holy
Breath of heaven
Breath of heaven
Breath of heaven

This Mashup Of Golden Age Movie Dance Scenes Set To 'Uptown Funk' Will Make Your Day

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzpBCr8P4WA
"Michael Binder is what you would call a “movie aficionado” through and through. He’s probably watched just about every single movie you’ve ever heard of, twice. In fact, Binder loves movies so much that he’s managed to make a career writing about them and talking about them for his hundreds of followers.

But when he saw the mega viral hit that featured a bunch of dance scenes from popular movies matched up to the incredibly popular song, “Uptown Funk,” he was instantly inspired to do a similar mashup, only he wanted to use dance scenes from movies that only came out of the Golden Age of cinema.

It took him a long while to find the perfect clips which properly conveyed the energy and passion, but after he scanned through hundreds and hundreds of movies from 1953 and earlier, he finally edited together an absolutely stunning video featuring some of our favorite dancers and singers.

It’s pretty amazing to watch legends like, Gene Kelly, Shirley Temple, Judy Garland, and Fred Astaire dance to one of the catchiest songs ever!

The amount of time it must have taken to edit this whole piece together is truly astounding. Not only did Binder have to be aware of the dance sequence in his head, but he had to time it properly with the music without speeding up or slowing down the original footage.

In the end he created a video that is really fun to watch. He really put a lot of thought into this whole project, and just about everyone loves the final result!

Please SHARE this fantastic video if you love the old classics and wish they made movies like they used to!"

I WISH YOU PEACE - THE EAGLES

I always loved The Eagles.

This has always been my favorite song, even though it was only an 'album cut' from "One Of These Nights" released in 1975.

"Take It To The Limit" (my second favorite song) was a #4 single from the same album:

Surprising origins of 100-year-old "Danny Boy" - UPDATE

CBS NEWS: December 31, 2013, 12:55 PM:
This year marks a century since the song "Danny Boy" first weaved its way into Irish folklore. Its melody could be heard at President Kennedy’s funeral and it also played at the farewell to Elvis Presley.

The ballad that has proved irresistible to some of the biggest names in music is a song of love and loss - a lament for those missing home and each other.

“Danny Boy” arrived a century ago and never left. But arrived from where? Most people assume it’s from Ireland, but it’s not. It was written by an Englishman.

That Englishman was Fred Weatherly, a prolific songwriter - and later successful lawyer - who published 1,500 songs.

HALLELUJAH: not just a song anymore - UPDATE

Father Ray Kelly of Meathe has taken the internet by storm, and captured the essence of this amazing song like no other before:

Irish priest astounds at wedding with incredible rendition of 'Hallelujah'

Ashley Fetters, writing for The Atlantic (12/04/2012), presents a fascinating account of Alan Light's new book The Holy or the Broken: Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley, and the Unlikely Ascent of "Hallelujah": A new book traces the the song's strange rise to pop-cultural ubiquity.

You may still prefer the Leonard Cohen original, or some of the others along the way that are chronicled below with videos. I didn't like Jeff Buckley's until I listened a second time--am fascinated with his teeth!--and I really liked Alexandra Burke's "X Factor" version. But Father Kelly proves Cohen's companion/collaborator Anjani Thomas wrong when she said, after hearing k.d. lang perform 'Hallelujah' at the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2006: "I think we can lay that song to rest now! It's really been done to its ultimate, blissful state of perfection."

You be the judge:

How Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' Became Everybody's 'Hallelujah'

UPDATE:

New from THE JEWISH STANDARD [We are the oldest independent weekly Jewish newspaper in New Jersey. Based in Teaneck, we cover Bergen, Hudson, and Passaic counties and beyond.]
You probably wouldn't believe us if we told you the IDF produced the best version of Leonard Cohen's Halleluja ever. So here it is. You be the judge.

From my romantic, sentimental husband

This youtube vid shows Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth dancing to a song called "Midnight, The Stars And You", one of my favorite songs of the 1930's.

The song is performed by The Ray Noble Orchestra featuring Al Bowlly (one of the great Brit singers from that period). Dance scenes from the Motion Picture "You Were Never Lovelier". Not sure if this is the original music from that film or if someone overlaid it later, but it works.

I first heard this song when Stanley Kubrick used it at the end of his 1980 movie "The Shining" (book by Steven King).

And...Rita Hayworth is hot hot hot!!!
