Victor Davis Hanson: "A reminder that abstract progressive ideologies impose life-and-death consequences on millions"

Roads between mountain communities are windy, narrow, and often potholed and crumbling (California remains near last in state-by-state infrastructure ratings, though it will soon have the nation's highest gas taxes). For many foothill residents, the ensuing lack of traffic and easy mountain access is seen as a sort of blessing, ensuring privacy and a lack of tourism. Unfortunately, the net result of both poor and too few roads was that when wind-swept fires leapt through canyons and up hillsides, it was almost impossible to escape rural communities and private residences with any rapidity. And so, homes burned down and people died.

In a larger sense, twenty-first-century California is starting to confront the real-life consequences of its own abstract ideologies — on several tragic fronts. The nearly five-year drought taught us that entire communities and vast irrigated acreages could disappear if we ignored our forefathers' warnings to keep building reservoirs, aqueducts, and dams commensurately with population growth, and to abide by the original rationale of these multi-billion-dollar projects. Open borders and sanctuary cities appear humanitarian, but when the result was the arrival of millions of impoverished immigrants without legal status, English fluency, and high school diplomas, state resources once prioritized for roads, bridges, canals, reservoirs, and airports were directed to accommodate vast expansions of social-welfare programs. The idea of ending close state supervision of those suffering from psychological disorders and mental illnesses, when combined with strict zoning and environmental laws that stymied new low-cost housing construction, led to hundreds of thousands of homeless living on the sidewalks of the state's temperate coastal cities, from San Diego to Berkley. Medieval plagues like typhus and infectious hepatitis are often the result.

These same paradoxes help explain the 2018 epidemic of destructive forest fires, a tragic consequence of ideology trumping reality and common sense. Once upon a time, the architects of state governance understood that living in paradise required constant investments and vigilance against the vagaries of both Mother Nature and human nature, whether that meant managed forestry, road construction, reasonable building codes, or water storage and transfers. In theory, at least, millions of dead trees may have been ecological assets for a near pristine, mid-twentieth-century California of 10 million people. But such natural kindling can pose an existential danger to a complex civilization of 40 million twentieth-first century state residents.

4/20/18: Fox & Friends Discusses Presidential Eligibility

“YOU HAVE TO BE BORN IN THE UNITED STATES”
by Sharon Rondeau
(Apr. 20, 2018) — During the 6 AM hour on Friday’s “Fox & Friends,” co-host Steve Doocy quickly reviewed the qualifications for the President of the United States gleaned from Article II of the U.S. Constitution.
The discussion arose after New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called himself “undocumented” in remarks made during an April 12 bill-signing in an effort to protest President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.

Guess who asked the right question?

Mike Huckabee:
Kim is asking the perfect question: 'Under what law am I authorized to issue homosexual couples a marriage license?' That simple question is giving many in Congress a civics lesson that they never got in grade school. The Supreme Court cannot and did not make a law. They only made a ruling on a law. Congress makes the laws. Because Congress has made no law allowing for same sex marriage, Kim does not have the constitutional authority to issue a marriage license to homosexual couples.

Senator Cruz, Senator Rubio, and Governor Jindal Should Not Be Allowed to Participate in the Presidential Debates Because They, Like De Facto President Obama, Are All Not Natural Born Citizens and Therefore Not Eligible to Be President

By Mario Apuzzo, Esq. - May 25, 2015

EXCERPT:
President Obama, Senator Cruz, Senator Rubio, and Governor Jindal are all "citizens" of the United States "at birth,” but only by virtue of some non-common law positive law. None of them are "natural born citizens" by virtue of common law which provides the only definition of the clause which is a child born in a country to parents (father and mother) who were its citizens at the time of the child's birth. Obama (if born in the United States), Rubio, and Jindal are “citizens” of the United States “at birth,” but only because of the Fourteenth Amendment, by the only fact of being born in the United States. Cruz is a “citizen” of the United States “at birth,” but only because of a naturalization Act of Congress, by the only fact of being born to one U.S. citizen parent. None of them were born with the complete facts and circumstances needed at birth to be a natural born citizen and which allows one to be a natural born citizen and therefore a citizen without the aid of any positive law. They are all missing either birth to two U.S. citizen parents or birth in the United States. Obama was born a citizen of and in allegiance to the United States (through jus soli if he was born in the United States) and Great Britain and then Kenya upon conversion through its independence from Great Britain (through jus sanguinis from his father). Cruz was born a citizen of and in allegiance to the United States (through jus sanguinis if his mother was still a U.S. citizen at the time of his birth) and born a citizen of and in allegiance to Canada (through jus soli) and Cuba (through jus sanguinis from his father). Rubio and Jindal were born citizens of and in allegiance to the United States (through jus soli) and Cuba (through jus sanguinis from both of their parents). They are all therefore under U.S. law not born with sole allegiance to the United States, but also subject to a foreign power and with natural sympathies for those foreign nations, a condition that the Framers did not allow future Presidents and Commanders to have. Being born subject to foreign powers and influence and with such sympathies, they are not nor can they be natural born citizens. Not being natural born citizens, they are not eligible to be President.

Chris Christie: Unresolved vetting problems from 2012 cloud future for 2016 presidential election

Here are the problems Mitt Romney's vetting team ran into, and, as far as I know, are still unresolved:
Four nights later, on July 19, Myers’ team put the finishing touches on the Pufferfish vetting dossier. Included was a DVD with some of Christie’s most outlandish or unnerving YouTube hits: his castigating a pro-gay-marriage New Jersey assemblyman as “numb nuts,” his angrily berating a constituent while chasing him down the Seaside Heights boardwalk, brandishing an ice cream cone. But the main event was the 35-page written report titled “Chris Christie memo 71912 FINAL.”
After 11 days of teeth-gnashing labor, several of the issues that the vetters had unearthed around Christie were still unresolved. Myers and her team were sticklers. Uncomfortable producing a final report they considered incomplete, they made a point of being meticulous about framing and flagging the problems, including a refrain in bold applied to a number of items.
On Todd Christie’s securities-fraud settlement: “[Governor] Christie has been asked to disclose whether Todd Christie incurred any monetary or other penalty as a result of the SEC/NYSE action. If Christie’s possible selection is to move forward, this item should be obtained.” On Christie’s defamation lawsuit: “Christie has been asked to provide the terms of the settlement of this matter. If Christie’s possible selection is to move forward, this item should be obtained.” On Christie’s household help: “Christie has been asked to provide the names and documented status of all domestic employees. This material has not been received. If Christie’s possible selection is to move forward, these items should be obtained.” On Christie’s lobbying clients: “Christie has provided only one of the twelve or so [public disclosure] filings made [in the time he was a lobbyist] … If Christie’s possible selection is to move forward, these items should be obtained.
Then there was this: “In response to the questionnaire, Governor Christie indicates that he has no health issues that would hinder him from serving as the vice-presidential nominee. Published reports indicate that Christie suffers from asthma and was briefly hospitalized last year after he suffered an asthma attack. He is also obese and has indicated that he struggles with his weight. ‘The weight exacerbates everything,’ he is quoted as saying. Christie has been asked to provide a detailed medical report. Christie has been asked to provide a copy of all medical records from his most recent physical examination. If Christie’s possible selection is to move forward, this item should be obtained.
Despite the language in the report indicating that Christie had not been sufficiently forthcoming with his medical records, Romney and Myers agreed that what he had provided put their minds at ease about his health. But the dossier on the Garden State governor’s background was littered with potential land mines. Between that and the pay-to play snag, there was no point in thinking about Christie further. With the clock running out, Romney pulled the plug again, this time for good.

California in crisis

Conn Carroll: What happened to the Golden State?
Over the next four days, The Washington Examiner will look at what ails California, and how it got to its current state of failure. We will look at the state's out-of-control budget and debt, the powerful union interests driving it, the decline of its education system, the failure of its "clean energy" initiatives and the environmental regulations that are wrecking the economy in many regions of the state.

The current trends in the Golden State point to a failing state -- a California in crisis.

Tomorrow: The California spending rush.

Mexican Nazis

From To The Point News:
By the way, whenever will Mexican Nazis be called racists?  Fox disclosed this week (12/17) that the school district of Salinas, California intends to name an elementary school after a murderous 19thcentury Mexican bandit, Tiburcio Vasquez.  This is straight out Orwellian Marxist racism, another attempt to portray a murdering thug as an anti-white, anti-America hero like Che Guevara.

So I have a suggestion for TTPers.  That you email or call the hate-America racist responsible for this, John Ramirez, Superintendent of the Alisal Union School District, and politely ask that he stop making his school infamous and an object of ridicule - and instead, name this school after a true 19th century Mexican-American hero and patriot.

That would be Romualdo Pacheco (1831-1899) - the first and to this day only Hispanic governor of California.  He had an extraordinary career as you can read in the link - being, just for example, one of the first politicians in California to denounce slavery, and the only California Governor to have roped a grizzly bear.  Not even Ronald Reagan can claim that!

Strangely, not a single California school has yet been named after him - although the Governor Romualdo Pacheco Elementary School in Indio (near Palm Springs) is scheduled to open next year.

The Salinas Peace Officer Association has condemned Ramirez's honoring a murdering bandit, while the Monterey County Deputy Sherriff Association has expressed "extreme disappointment."  You could contact them as well with the suggestion of Gov. Pacheco.

So Superintendent Ramirez, by making his decision immediate, could be the first to honor California's only Mexican-American governor - and be praised instead of denounced and laughed at.

There is however an important connection between Gov. Pacheco and the bandit Vasquez.  When Vasquez was finally captured and found guilty of murder by trial jury in January, 1875, he was sentenced to death by hanging.  In early March, he appealed to the state's new governor, who had just taken office on February 27, for clemency.  The appeal was denied, and on March 19, 1875, Vasquez was hung.  The governor who denied the appeal was Romualdo Pacheco.

Ps:  the story of Mexican Nazis is told in TTP, May 2005.

Why they leave

"Business leaving the City of Los Angeles for a nearby county can save up to 20% in costs while moving to another state can save up to 40% in costs."
Companies Continue to Leave Anti-Business California in Record Numbers to Save 40% in Costs

This is my home state. I've watched liberals ruin it. I continue to watch idiots vote for them.

UPDATE:

“You are kidding yourself if you think you can be one of the highest-taxed states in the nation, have a reputation for being anti-business -- and have a rosy economic future.”

-- Gov. Cuomo on Oct. 17, explaining why he intends to keep his campaign vow and oppose new taxes for New York, including the “millionaires tax”

Pastor Hagee receives a bomb threat

Glenn Beck:
One of the guest speakers at Glenn’s “Restoring Courage” event and the leader of Christians United for Israel received a note this morning telling him “There’s a bomb set to go off unless you withdraw your backing of Governor Rick Perry. So I’d stay away from all ministry offices.” Glenn was shocked, but it turns out this wasn’t the worst threat he’s had to deal with.

“There was a man who walked into my church during a Bible study. It was on a Wednesday night, and he came in. He was carrying a loaded six‑shooter, and he walked to the front of the church and he roared like a wild animal and said, ‘I’ve come to shoot you to prove that Satan has more power than Jesus Christ.’ And I held up my Bible and said that this book says that no weapon formed against me shall prosper. And he became infuriated and said, ‘I’m going to kill you on the count of three. Get on your knees and beg for your life.’ I said, I will not because the Lord is my protector. And he said, ‘I’m going to shoot you on the count of three.’ He lied. He started shooting on the count of two. And he emptied the gun at me from a distance of eight to ten feet, and by the grace and mercy of God missed every shot. He ran out of the building, he was knocked down, apprehended, sent a few days later to the asylum for the criminally insane. Ninety days later a team of psychiatrists pronounced him ready to take his place in society and he went home and immediately climbed the highest tree in his backyard and hung himself,” Hagee told Glenn.

“And this, this bomb threat is coming because our church went to Houston, Texas Saturday and participated in the prayer service that Governor Perry called for us to pray for a nation in crisis, and that entire service that lasted from 10:00 in the morning to 3:30 in the afternoon was apolitical. It was nothing more than prayer, repentance, fasting, calling out on God to help America and to help break this drought in Texas. And here someone who’s from out of state sends this threat because I will tell you that prayer infuriates the ungodly,” Hagee added.

Wisconsin "Black List" threatens citizens and business owners

Just in from a friend:

A cousin in Madison, WI sent the following. Please join me in praying for her and her husband, all the people in Wisconsin and the USA.
It is almost scary to go anywhere near the Capitol here. The mayor even asked for the police to stand down so forget it if you don't support the union. There is a black list out also if you are a business and you might have even given any money to Scott Walker's campaign. People are getting calls on who they support and if they don't say the union something happens to your house or your business is boycotted. All sorts of laws are being broken, but as long as it is in support of the union....well then it's ok. The paper and all the local tv news stations are left winged. Thank goodness for channel 1310, which is our conservative channel here.

Rush Limbaugh wonders why Dr. Chiyome Fukino (HDOH) claimed she'd seen Obama's birth certificate but now new Gov. Neil Abercrombie can't find it!

A great observation that I haven't seen repeated in the coverage below of Rush's first half hour show today!
