Why I'm Supporting Rick Perry - By Jamie Johnson

Following the disastrous presidency of an inexperienced first-term senator with great speaking ability, America needs three things in the next president of the United States: (1) a strong chief executive, (2) a strong commander-in-chief, and (3) a strong moral leader.

By a strong chief executive, I mean someone who has actually run a government; someone who has created a civic climate for job growth, business growth, and personal income growth; someone who has tackled the problems of over-taxation, over-regulation, and over-litigation; someone who has forged a legacy of prosperity and opportunity that is a model for good government.

By a strong commander-in-chief, I mean someone who has actually worn the uniform of our country; someone who knows what it means to command a military force; someone who our allies will trust and our enemies will fear; someone who will put freedom on the offensive.

By a strong moral leader, I mean someone who will defend life, marriage, and religious liberty; someone who will champion every freedom in the Bill of Rights; someone who will lead with humility, integrity, and honor; someone who will never forget where he came from, nor the Bible’s command to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly before God.

Former Texas Governor Rick Perry is all three of these things. In fact, of all the good people (and there are several) who are considering a run for the presidency, he is the only one who qualifies as being all three.

First, Rick Perry is a strong chief executive. For the last 14 years he has been the most successful executive in America. He has not been running a business or a senate staff; he has been running a state—a state of 27 million people, the second largest state in the nation, the 13th largest economy in the world. And his record of job growth, business growth, and personal income growth is not only second-to-none, it is unparalleled in our time. Simply put, Rick Perry has been the most successful American governor in the last 100 years.

Second, Rick Perry is a strong commander-in-chief. As a captain in the U.S. Air Force, as a pilot who flew C-130 tactical airlift in Europe and the Middle East, as the commander-in-chief of the largest state military force in the nation (the Texas National Guard), Rick Perry has proven beyond any doubt that he will do what is necessary to secure America’s borders, rebuild America’s military, and renew America’s leadership in the world.

Third, Rick Perry is a strong moral leader. He has valiantly defended life, marriage, and religious liberty; he has championed every freedom in the Bill of Rights; and he has never forgotten his humble roots—growing up on a dryland cotton farm, in a home without running water, 16 miles from the nearest post office—where he learned what it truly means to “love God and love thy neighbor.”

Rick Perry is not a show horse; he’s a work-horse. He’s not about rhetoric; he’s about results. He doesn’t just talk about liberty; he’s put his life on the line to defend it. More than any other person considering a run for the presidency, Governor Rick Perry, who has given 30 years of public service to his country, is the most qualified and best prepared person to lead the United States of America.

Fiasco: Bachmann, Huntsman, Santorum fail to make Virginia ballot

That’s not even the worst part. The worst part is that Perry and Gingrich, either one of whom could still become the Great Grassroots Hope against Romney, might not have qualified either. You need 10,000 signatures to make the ballot but 15,000 are recommended since a bunch are bound to be thrown out as false or duplicative as the petitions are scrutinized. You also need at least 600 signatures from each of Virginia’s 11 congressional districts. Romney submitted 16,026 and Ron Paul submitted 14,361. Perry’s total: 11,911. Gingrich’s: 11,050. If they end up getting bounced, the Republican primary ballot for one of America’s key swing states will consist exclusively of … Mitt Romney and Ron Paul.

I used to like the flat tax. In fact, I used to propose exactly what Rick Perry is now pushing - an optional flat tax where taxpayers could either make their way through the labyrinth of IRS fine print in search of deductions or could just pay a flat percent of their income in taxes and be done with it.

But then came 2007-2008 and the flaws in our economy became glaringly apparent: The pursuit of wealth through loopholes in the tax code and other speculative devices rather than by productive investment in economic growth. So when Herman Cain proposed 9-9-9, I was and am ready to embrace the idea.

Though imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Perry's rush to put his own tax reform on the table is an obvious attempt to horn in on the limelight in which Cain has basked. But the proposals are just not comparable.

Cain's goal is to reduce the drag that the income tax puts on entrepreneurial initiative and hard work. By slashing the income tax rate, effectively, in half, he makes it that much more worthwhile to get up in the morning, take risks, work hard, take chances, and invest in progress. By eliminating the capital gains tax, he rewards investment and ownership and makes it possible for people to move up the economic ladder, not through phony teaser Fannie Mae mortgages, but by smart purchases and skillful investint.

The goal of Perry's proposal is far more modest: He wants to cut our paperwork. He wants to make it possible to file one's taxes in a few minutes rather than devote days and weeks to the task. He proposes, essentially, a short form for middle income and rich people so tax preparation won't consume their lives. It's a worthy goal. We need to trim the ranks of IRS auditors and staff and free people to make sound investment decisions regardless of the tax consequences. We need to get the IRS out of our lives and a flat tax is a good way to do it.

But Cain's proposal is so very much more important. Perry will nibble around the edges, freeing valuable hours from tax preparation to be available for wealth creation. But Herman Cain would establish America as a beacon for investors, entrepreneurs, inventors, creative business people, and all manner of upwardly mobile, ambitious men and women. He would give the U.S. the lowest personal and corporate tax rates in the world, and the only place where investment earnings are tax free. In the process, he and his plan would kindle decades of robust economic growth. He would make the next few decades a continuation of the American Century.

To trivialize Cain's big idea by comparing to to Perry's small one is a vast disservice. Perry would not reduce the amount of money taken in by income and corporate profit taxation. He would just shift it to shorter forms and a nominally lower rate (but not really lower). Taxes would appear to be cut, but the amount we would have to pay would be more or less the same. He even strives to have his program seen as revenue neutral.

Cain would shift about half of our nation's tax revenues to consumption taxes and away from income taxes. He would vastly reduce the disincentive to earn and encourage savings and investment by taxing spending.

It is not enough to undo the damage Obama has done to the economy by repealing his spending, taxing, health care, and regulatory actions. All that will do is dial us back to the sick economy Bush bequeathed to America. The diseases of the first decade of the 21st Century will still be with us. But Cain's ideas really get at the heart of the problem -- in much the same way that Reagan's reducing of the top personal tax rate from 70% to 28% solved the stagflation of the 70s.

Cain's reforms are the real deal. Perry's are a pale imitation.

We met out-of-town friends last night -- D.C. friends -- and didn't yet watch the debate.

But it doesn't look good for Perry from what Prof. Jacobson has to say:

On appearances, Perry came across once again as ill-prepared, stumbling, and uncomfortable. I cringe at the thought of the Rick Perry from last night’s debate on stage in October 2012 against Obama with the whole country watching. I hope there is another Rick Perry out there, because last night’s Rick Perry would not stand a chance on stage against our smooth-talking, fact-misstating President.

The really good conservatives (and really good men) in this race are Rick Santorum and Herman Cain. (I'm not all-in for Michelle Bachmann at this time.)

Why is it that they are written off so fast and so easily?

The one person who has been considered to be a shoe-in is Romney, and he is no different than a liberal Democrat.

Mark Steyn is speaking as I'm typing and he's saying the same thing: It would seem statistically improbable that the two lead candidates in the Republican Party are not sounding like Republicans!

This is essentially a major retraction on his “Ponzi scheme” remark at the debate last week.  The USA Today poll said 32% of the people wouldn’t vote for him because of his “Ponzi” characterization so like the politician he is he joined the Democrats and Republicans like Romney to “repair” the un-repairable rather than replace the system with private investment accounts like 15 countries have done following the lead of Chile and the advice of supply-side economist Milton Friedman.

Listen folks the only repairs on the table are a combination of raising the retirement age, means testing and reducing the rate of automatic increases in benefits.  Each is a MAJOR BENEFIT CUT and TAX INCREASE.

America what are you thinking? Are we socialists or capitalists?

In Chile which has been accumulating personal wealth for its citizens in personal investment accounts for 30 years lets 55 year-olds access special computers to decide whether to retire and what insurance annuity they want to buy with their accumulated nest egg. Our politicians are about to raise our retirement age to 75.

The American system Perry wants to fix has no nest egg accumulated for its workers. So he is just another mathematically-challenged RINO in my opinion. I pray that Sarah Palin enters the race and advocates privatization of the system like we thought Perry would do.

LET’S REVIVE THE ECONOMY NOW

Chile followed the advice of Milton Freidman’s Chicago school of economics and is presently running a 7% a year increase in GDP. And what are we running – 0%. If we ran a 7% increase our GDP would skyrocket with the addition of $1 trillion of sales and services each year. That would mean that on each day of the year including Saturdays and Sundays there would be an increase in the sales of goods and services of $2.74 billion dollars we didn’t have the day before.

Now think about this. How many jobs would be created to service an increase of sales and services of $2.74 billion dollars a day? Assuming $50,000 of sales per employee then we would add 54,800 new jobs every day 24/7 or 20 million jobs annually. Assuming $100,000 of sales per job we still would be adding 10 million jobs.

In other words privatizing Social Security in Chile was a massive job creator.

AND WHAT DO WE NEED IN THE USA TODAY?

JOBS, JOBS, JOBS.

My Rise Up America plan needs to be considered nationally. It does for the poor and middle-class what “trickle down” did for the rich and as a kicker creates millions upon millions of jobs immediately. Forget that it will create a $4 million nest egg and a $33,000 monthly retirement check for the average household in the future think about saving our economy today.

Only new investment capital creates new jobs in the private sector.  Why should we have to rely on the rich to supply that capital when the people – remember those of, by and for the people – can surely invest their payroll taxes in the economy and create their own jobs.

Can we get out of the sandbox and go back to class?

Can’t we measure up to Chile.

Come on! Let’s roll!

Pastor Hagee receives a bomb threat

Glenn Beck:

One of the guest speakers at Glenn’s “Restoring Courage” event and the leader of Christians United for Israel received a note this morning telling him “There’s a bomb set to go off unless you withdraw your backing of Governor Rick Perry. So I’d stay away from all ministry offices.” Glenn was shocked, but it turns out this wasn’t the worst threat he’s had to deal with.

“There was a man who walked into my church during a Bible study. It was on a Wednesday night, and he came in. He was carrying a loaded six‑shooter, and he walked to the front of the church and he roared like a wild animal and said, ‘I’ve come to shoot you to prove that Satan has more power than Jesus Christ.’ And I held up my Bible and said that this book says that no weapon formed against me shall prosper. And he became infuriated and said, ‘I’m going to kill you on the count of three. Get on your knees and beg for your life.’ I said, I will not because the Lord is my protector. And he said, ‘I’m going to shoot you on the count of three.’ He lied. He started shooting on the count of two. And he emptied the gun at me from a distance of eight to ten feet, and by the grace and mercy of God missed every shot. He ran out of the building, he was knocked down, apprehended, sent a few days later to the asylum for the criminally insane. Ninety days later a team of psychiatrists pronounced him ready to take his place in society and he went home and immediately climbed the highest tree in his backyard and hung himself,” Hagee told Glenn.

“And this, this bomb threat is coming because our church went to Houston, Texas Saturday and participated in the prayer service that Governor Perry called for us to pray for a nation in crisis, and that entire service that lasted from 10:00 in the morning to 3:30 in the afternoon was apolitical. It was nothing more than prayer, repentance, fasting, calling out on God to help America and to help break this drought in Texas. And here someone who’s from out of state sends this threat because I will tell you that prayer infuriates the ungodly,” Hagee added.
