By the 1770s, the generation of Colonial leaders who fought the American Revolution and passed and ratified the Constitution embraced the concepts of popular sovereignty, individual free choice, and need for covenantal agreements–expressed in writing and clearly understood by all to either accept or reject–that Roger Williams and John Lilburne had first advanced more than a century before as natural continuations of their Christian faith to the civil realm.

Many Americans would be surprised to learn that the word "democracy" does not appear in the Declaration of Independence or the U.S. Constitution, nor does it appear in any of the constitutions of the fifty states. The Founders did everything they could to keep us from having a Democracy!

“We’re done.”

Frankly, this is more shocking than the famous quote spoken to Scarlett Ohara by Rhett Butler in the movie "Gone With The Wind": “Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.”

"We're done," a growing sentiment amongst the guardians of our freedom, means we are leaving behind the freedom of our Constitutional Republic and entering the free-for-all of a chaotic anarchism whose only outcome can be a totalitarian regime, most likely that of Islam, judging from our "presidents" own loyalties.

Those words were said to me by dozens of incredibly frustrated and discouraged officers in the last two weeks at a half a dozen Calibre Press seminars.

I’ve listened to police officers who were incredibly emotional. One had been shot several times while trying to protect a woman from a husband on a domestic abuse case. Another had been shot making a simple traffic stop.

Several teared up as they talked about how hard they work and what they have sacrificed personally to do their jobs and protect those in their communities. One told me how he ran into a burning house to save the occupants. Another talked of diving into a flooded street to save a person stuck in a car. These are people who loved their job—until their job became toxic in the popular discourse.

I had conversations with several officers who had experienced significant stress during the so-called “peaceful” demonstrations going on right now. They talked emotionally of being called “pig” and “murderer” and all sorts of other vile names.

I’ve seen videos where officers have the finger in their face, inches away from their eyes while the demonstrators called them “slaves” and “killers.”

And what’s becoming their emotional reaction across this country? “We’re done.”

2013: YEAR OF THE ABSURD

I was driving to do some errands recently and heard a caller on one of my favorite talk radio stations make a statement about the absurdity of the whole country hanging on every word coming from a couple of guys in D.C. who are deciding who gets to keep what and who gets stuff taken away from them to give to someone else.

Is this America?

Apparently, it is.

While half the country (at least) hasn't a clue about who the country's leaders are or even what the major issues are (Benghazi: "Ben who?"), the rest of us have spent our new year holiday with an ear tuned in to discover what the hell our fates will be in 2013 and beyond.

This has got to stop, but I'm not sure where to start.

It began with Karl Marx, the Fabian Socialists, the Frankfurt School, Woodrow Wilson, John Dewey, the Roosevelt boys (Franklin and Teddy), and--sealed in law--the two biggies from 1913: the creature from Jekyll Island (the Fed) and the income tax law.

Some say it happened with the 17th Amendment when Senators became elected instead of appointed.

Salon weighed in on this last August: Why would anyone want to take away people’s rights to elect their senators?

Sen. Mike Lee, the Ivy League-educated Tea Party judicial mastermind from Utah, told CNN in 2010 that “the 17th Amendment was a mistake.” Texas Gov. Rick Perry also called the amendment “mistaken,” as did Rep. Paul Broun, a Republican from Georgia. Even conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said in 2010,

“I would change it back to what they wrote, in some respects. The 17th Amendment has changed things enormously … [Y]ou can trace the decline of so-called states’ rights throughout the rest of the 20th century.”

Alaska’s 2010 Republican nominee Joe Miller and perennial GOP candidate Alan Keyes have also signed on to the cause.

The enormous weight of all these years filled with missteps, both judicial and political, have made the saving of the United States as founded seem as insurmountable as Frodo's quest to destroy the ring.

I just saw on Facebook that Mark Levin is cutting his vacation short to return to the air on Thursday and Friday of this week.

He's never given up yet, and I doubt he would return just to monitor events (there are plenty of other sources for that). So I'm looking for an idea or two--because I'm out of 'em for now.

Slavery or Freedom?

THE QUESTION:

When Benjamin Franklin was asked at the close of the 1787 Constitutional Convention, "What have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?”, the learned gentleman answered both wisely and cynically, “A Republic, if you can keep it.”

Can we keep it? That's the question at the heart of the great struggle for America's soul. Are we a nation of laws or a people of pop culture?

THE SITUATION:

America, the original Ownership Society, is swiftly becoming the Owned Society. The Ownership Society meant that Americans were one of the few citizenries that actually government themselves, because they owned their country. The Owned Society by contrast rolls everything together into one massive bureaucratic pyramid that owns everything and controls everyone, from cradle to grave.

The way to turn one into the other is through disempowerment and devaluation. And by causing people to forget that they are owners, by promising them that life as slaves will be so much easier for them. Why bother working hard when your new bureaucratic masters promise to take care of you instead? Universal health care, unlimited immigration, universal laws, universal everything. Come for the free chains, stay for the 16 hour ditch digging in the volunteer community corps.

The Rule of Law be damned

The rule of law is the principle that governmental authority is legitimately exercised only in accordance with written, publicly disclosed laws adopted and enforced in accordance with established procedure. The principle is intended to be a safeguard against arbitrary governance. The Rule of Law

Now we have an Hispanic group demanding the Federal government not enforce the laws. Why? Because 99% of the law breakers (illegal aliens) are Hispanic. To arrest these folks was "like Nazi Germany" according to this group. Name calling is what bullies and dictators use. always throw in Nazi’s and folks will quiver. But not this time. Honest people want laws enforced. Obviously the folks calling for a "moratorium" are not honest people. Plus, there care about the housing, jobs, education and health care of illegal aliens as a first priority, and the needs of honest citizens having NO priority.

Unlike a pure democracy, in a constitutional republic, citizens are not governed by the majority of the people but by the rule of law.
