Yankees, White Sox to play at Field of Dreams

The New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox will play a game at the famed Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa, on Aug. 13, 2020, the teams announced Thursday.

"Field of Dreams is an iconic, generational baseball story built upon a deep love of the game that transcends even the most impossible of circumstances," White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said in a statement. "The filmmakers tell a beautiful story that resonates to this day. It is an incredible honor for the White Sox franchise to be the home team against the Yankees in a special setting that will capture everyone's imagination just like the movie does. It seems very fitting that 30 years after the film's debut, MLB will build a ballfield in an Iowa cornfield where we will come to play a game so that baseball fans can create their own memories to be cherished for decades."

Newsmax's Top 25 Conservative Documentaries of All Time

While conservative documentaries are often panned by Hollywood critics and seldom garner film festival awards, many draw impressive crowds to theaters, rack up eye-popping box office totals, and have exerted a significant impact on American culture and politics.

For instance, film industry experts say “2016: Obama’s America,” “The Clinton Chronicles,” and “Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party” helped lay the groundwork for the election of Donald Trump as president and other conservatives.

“Some of these movies have actually changed the political landscape,” says Dr. Ted Baehr, a media critic and publisher and editor-in-chief of Movieguide, a website and journal that evaluates films and television programs from a conservative Christian perspective.

New York Times best-selling author Dinesh D’Souza says his 2012 film “2016: Obama’s America” didn’t keep voters from electing Barack Obama as president, but his 2016 film “Hillary’s America” seemed to have more of an impact.

“Arguably my later film ‘Hillary’s America’ had more impact in actually shaping the narrative and the outcome of an election,” D’Souza told Newsmax. “'2016' was my first documentary. I’ve now done three of them. In fact, I have a new one (tentatively titled ‘Death of a Nation’) coming out this summer, but I think the Hillary movie may have had more electoral impact, although the Obama movie I think has had a greater impact in shaping how Obama is seen by the population at large and perhaps also by history.”

Now, to help readers choose some of the best conservative documentaries, Newsmax has compiled a list of the top 25 conservative documentaries of all time. The criteria followed were simple: The films that generated the highest box office totals and made a “significant impact.”

In selecting the films, Newsmax sought to pick the documentaries by cross-referencing data on Box Office Mojo with the Internet Movie Database as well as information provided by filmmakers and film industry experts.

The second criterion — films that made a “significant impact” — is a more subjective one based on knowledge of conservative documentaries and the film industry.

Given thousands of documentary films made over the decades, undoubtedly some fine films were left out, but this list will give Newsmax readers a discerning guide to the highest-grossing and most impactful conservative documentaries.

"Michael Binder is what you would call a “movie aficionado” through and through. He’s probably watched just about every single movie you’ve ever heard of, twice. In fact, Binder loves movies so much that he’s managed to make a career writing about them and talking about them for his hundreds of followers.

But when he saw the mega viral hit that featured a bunch of dance scenes from popular movies matched up to the incredibly popular song, “Uptown Funk,” he was instantly inspired to do a similar mashup, only he wanted to use dance scenes from movies that only came out of the Golden Age of cinema.

It took him a long while to find the perfect clips which properly conveyed the energy and passion, but after he scanned through hundreds and hundreds of movies from 1953 and earlier, he finally edited together an absolutely stunning video featuring some of our favorite dancers and singers.

It’s pretty amazing to watch legends like, Gene Kelly, Shirley Temple, Judy Garland, and Fred Astaire dance to one of the catchiest songs ever!

The amount of time it must have taken to edit this whole piece together is truly astounding. Not only did Binder have to be aware of the dance sequence in his head, but he had to time it properly with the music without speeding up or slowing down the original footage.

In the end he created a video that is really fun to watch. He really put a lot of thought into this whole project, and just about everyone loves the final result!

PHONY HOLLYWOOD COWARDS

In all these cases — the phony cowards like the Ashley Judds, the Meryl Streeps, the Hillary Clintons whose political races and foundations have been greased by pigs like Harvey Weinstein whose identification with Bill Clinton is all-too-comprehensible — the cowardice is overwhelming. Shivering, sniveling, gutless cowards who actually have been positioned for years and years to take down this pig. Had they done so, they could have spared dozens more women the shame and trauma of subsequent Weinstein assaults and outrages. But they were too cowardly to endanger their stations in Hollywood. Dared not speak out against a mogul, a “God.” Shivered, kept silent, perhaps endured silent nightmares and cold sweats. But nary a word. Because, while safely “speaking truth to power” from safe distances, they never would risk their own tuxedoes and glittering dinner gowns, their jewels and diamonds, and their access to invitations to the next Hollywood gala. Too dangerous. Too risky. Better to tweet a dismembered bloody head depicting the duly, lawfully, and democratically elected President of the United States.

And then at the Awards ceremonies and the “Women’s marches” they congratulate themselves for their courage to wear vagina hats and obscene tee-shirts, to recite filthy “poems” and to speak of blowing up the White House.

Top right (at the moment) is a category that started out as "Full Length Documentaries" and has now been changed to "Full Length Documentaries/Movies".

The movie I just added is a hysterically politically-incorrect film that could NEVER be made today. But you will die laughing. You may wonder why people are trying to suck all the humor out of life and why people are excoriated for saying something like "All Lives Matter".

Marxism, Maoism, socialism, statism, totalitarianism, and false religions all engage in stifling humor and joy from life because that is how they exercise control over their subjects. And besides, while they are torturing, beheading, demeaning everyone and stealing the fruits of your labor, you won't feel like laughing anyway.

Bogie & Bacall: A Hollywood Romance for the Ages

R.I.P. Betty Joan Perske.

“You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve? You just put your lips together, and…blow.” With that seductive line, delivered with a steely glare and husky voice, the world was introduced to a screen siren for the ages: Lauren Bacall. The line, later named the 34th greatest in the history of cinema by the American Film Institute, was delivered in Howard Hawks’s To Have and Have Not and written by none other than William Faulkner. And the dumbstruck man on the receiving end of the double entendre was Humphrey Bogart who, at 44, had a quarter of a century on this sultry, 19-year-old ingénue. It was the beginning of a beautiful romance—one that would become part of Hollywood lore.

Bacall, who passed away August 12 at 89 after suffering a stroke in her home, leaves behind a rich screen and stage résumé that includes two Tony Awards (for Applause in ’70 and Woman of the Year in ’81), an Academy Award nomination (The Mirror Has Two Faces, ’96), and a number of classic films, including To Have and Have Not, The Big Sleep, and Key Largo. In addition to her stellar body of work, she will always be remembered for being the no-nonsense half of Bogie and Bacall.

Losing a friend

Just learned that a new friend of ours John Fasano passed away July 19, 2014.

Comments on Deadline Hollywood all say what we discovered...John was so funny, generous, talented, and well-loved and will be really, really missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.

We had such a great time during this last year with John and his wife, Edie--they lived half a block down the tree and grass-lined streets against the mountains and across the street from our fantastic mutual yoga teacher, Marydale. Such good times!

They sold their place shortly after we sold ours last April and we were getting ready for them to visit us any day here in Arizona! My husband had planned to launch a relentless campaign to get them to move here (they were in the process of deciding among 5 or 6 different locations around the country).

Friends and good people are hard to find.

So, so damn sorry.

The song is performed by The Ray Noble Orchestra featuring Al Bowlly (one of the great Brit singers from that period). Dance scenes from the Motion Picture "You Were Never Lovelier". Not sure if this is the original music from that film or if someone overlaid it later, but it works.

I first heard this song when Stanley Kubrick used it at the end of his 1980 movie "The Shining" (book by Steven King).

The fact that they all ultimately threw over their evil spymasters in order to sail off with Bond shows that they were pro-value deep down, too, and capable of love. That's why we still love them 50 years on, and likely always will.
