Why does it matter that the practice of honor killing has Islamic sanction? Because if the roots of honor killing are never discussed and always ignored, the practice will never stop. Until the Islamic roots of the practice are discussed openly and human rights groups begin calling for reform, honor killings will continue in the Islamic world -- and in Muslim communities in the West.

The mainstream media has reported this as the "Santa killer." No mention that it was an Islamic honor killing until this Dallas Morning News story. Our daughters and granddaughters are going to be the ones who will suffer because of for this obfuscation and excusal of barbarism.

This has been going on for years. When Amina and Sarah Said were brutally murdered by their father, also in Texas, on New Year’s Day 2008 for the same reason -- having non-Muslim boyfriends -- I thought, this is it. This is going to break the dam wide open. America would not, could not possibly, ignore this horror caused by and sanctioned by Islamic beliefs, assumptions, and attitudes.

And yet America continues to ignore this horror. And more and more people are victimized every day.

A 10-year old Muslim girl was married off to a Muslim man, aged 42. The child was so unhappy with the arranged marriage that she ran away on a number of occasions but was forced by her family to return to her “husband.” Finally her husband and family had enough of the child’s disobedience and decided for the sake of her husband and family’s honor that she should be killed. Which they did by mutilating, dismembering and finally beheading her. Her body was discovered by a Thai couple out walking in a public park close to where the child’s family lived.
