The Letter

Excerpt from a letter from a subscriber to Porter Stansberry's excellent Stansberry Research newsletter:

In the 1930s and early '40s, our family took the Saturday Evening Post and at the time, Garet Garrett was one of the editors who wrote a weekly series of short financial editorials. (Later published in book form as The People's Pottage.)

Shortly after 'Pearl Harbor' the editors of the Post wrote to famed historian, Charles Beard requesting that he do a series of articles about 'The Lessons of History.' A few weeks later on the editorial page, the Post published his reply (which, at approx. age 17, I have never forgotten).

Mr. Beard thanked the editors for thinking of him but replied that he had in the past given the subject a great deal of thought and decided that the Lessons of History could be contained in four short paragraphs which were written below, and permission granted for anyone to utilize as desired. They are:

1. Those whom the Gods wish to destroy, they first make mad with Power.

2. The Bee fertilizes the flower it robs.

3. The Mills of the Gods' grind slowly; Yet they grind exceedingly fine. And last, but not least;

4. When it is dark enough, you can see the stars.

Porter then mentioned (after praising the letter) that

Garet Garrett – Edward Peter Garrett – is one of my heroes. Few people know his book The Driver served as a forerunner to Atlas Shrugged.

I certainly didn't know that, did you?

In one chapter of the book, an entrepreneur invents a new miracle metal -- stronger but lighter than steel. The government immediately appropriates the invention in "the public good." The politicians demand that the metal inventor come to Washington and sign over ownership of his invention or lose everything.

The scene is eerily similar to an event late last year when six bank presidents were summoned by Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson to Washington, and then shuttled into a conference room and told, in effect, that they could not leave until they collectively signed a document handing over percentages of their future profits to the government. The Treasury folks insisted that this shakedown, too, was all in "the public interest."

Atlas Shrugged: The Movie!

This is great news for us Ayn Rand fans..."Atlas Shrugged is an amazing tale of corruption of government and the should by "statists". This is a must see movie. While I am not impressed with Jolie as an actress, her personal fervor and attitude clearly matches that of Ayn Rand.

"It was published almost 50 years ago, and has sold millions of copies. But only now is Ayn Rand’s controversial individualist novel ’Atlas Shrugged’ about to become a movie starring Angelina Jolie. Ed Hudgins, editor of the New Individualist, tells me that the screenplay adapting the 1,100-page epic novel is only a couple weeks away from completion. Production is set to begin next year with the release of the film in 2008. Mr. Hudgins says fans of Atlas should be pleased that the adaptation is being authored by Randall Wallace, the scriptwriter for ’Braveheart,’ Mel Gibson’s epic tale of Scottish freedom fighters."
